Marvel released a preview of a new foil variant cover for Spider-Punk #1

Hobie Brown’s Spider-Punk will headline the Marvel four-issue limited series written by Cody Ziglar (Miles Morales: Spider-Man) and illustrated by Justin Mason (Spider-Man 2099: Dark Genesis). Ziglar and Mason worked together on the last Spider-Punk series, Battle of the Banned. Spider-Punk #1’s foil variant cover, provided by Ian Bertram, aptly depicts Hobie Brown as trippy and otherworldly.

Marvel’s description of the Spider-Punk series reads, “With an ax in hand and a chaotic band of punk rockin’ heroes backing him, he quickly rose to fame as a fan-favorite! Now, Hobie Brown returns, and in a world without Norman Osborn, Spider-Punk reigns! This ain’t no victory lap, though. As Hobie and the team try to rebuild society, Justin Hammer and Doctor Otto Octavius have other plans, like introducing the world to new Spider-Slaying Sentinels!”

Ziglar is thrilled to revisit the world of Spider-Punk, “It feels so friggin’ cool to dive back into Earth-138 with Justin and explore the world of Hobie and the Spider-band even more,” he said. “There are some new additions to the Spider-Punk roster, some real dope villains, and some other cool stuff I don’t wanna spoil but absolutely cannot wait for folks! And yes, there’ll 100% be a Spider-Punk Playlist Vol 2,” the writer revealed.

Who is Across the Spider-Verse’s Spider-Punk?

Spider-Punk’s Previous Appearances

Spider-Punk debuted in 2015’s Amazing Spider-Man #10 in a short story by Dan Slott and Olivier Coipel. Slott’s story introduced readers to Hobie Brown (who, in the main Marvel universe, briefly acted as the high-tech thief the Prowler before becoming an ally to Spider-Man), a homeless teenager who gains superpowers from the bite of a spider irradiated by President Norman Osborn’s toxic waste dumping. Adopting a rebellious look and an anti-authority attitude, Spider-Punk led the people of New York in an uprising against the President and his troops, eventually killing Osborn by decapitating him with an electric guitar.

Spider-Punk’s popularity with readers led to Ziglar and Mason’s Banned series, where Hobie teams with punk versions of Captain America, the Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Ironheart, and Daredevil to eliminate remnants of the Osborn Administration. The Spider-Punk character famously featured in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, garnering a positive audience response.

Spider-Punk #1 will arrive in comic book shops on February 28, 2024.
