Summary

Spider-Man and Captain Marvel’s short-lived romance still resonates with fans, as shown by this impressive cosplay collab on Instagram.
Although their relationship never fully developed in the comics, the chemistry between these two heroes is undeniable and worth revisiting.
Marvel may want to consider bringing back the Spider-Man/Captain Marvel pairing, as it still holds a special place in fans’ hearts despite its brevity.

The short-lived love affair between Spider-Man and Captain Marvel is back for an eye-popping cosplay. As surprising as a Peter Parker-Carol Danvers coupling may be, it’s easy to forget these two were an item because it was so brief. Still, the briefness doesn’t change the fact that this is one of Spider-Man’s best romances.

That romance returns in cosplay form as @wens.1998 and @susie_creates_cosplay have teamed up for an Avengers-level collab made for Instagram as they respectively portray Spider-Man and Captain Marvel. As seen below, the costuming choice is inspired by the iterations of the characters seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The cosplay depicts Spidey and Cap joining forces to take on a Skrull army, with a last-minute assist from Captain Marvel’s secret weapon, Goose.

On top of capturing that MCU style perfectly and looking good doing it, this cosplay reminds readers of why they fell in love with the Spidey/Cap pairing while it lasted.

Spider-Man and Captain Marvel’s History as a Couple

Short but Sweet

Although this isn’t a romance that audiences should expect to see in the MCU anytime soon, comic readers who do remember Captain Marvel and Spider-Man as each other’s love interests do remember it fondly. Back when Carol Danvers was still Ms. Marvel, an impromptu team-up leads to Peter Parker giving Carol an impromptu date invitation in Ms. Marvel #34 by Brian Reed, Paulo Siqueira, and Adriana da Silva. The dinner date wouldn’t come to fruition until Ms. Marvel #47 and initially, sparks do not fly.

Their romance wouldn’t get any further development until the Siege event in which the future Captain Marvel gets temporarily possessed by the Venom symbiote. After Venom suggests that his new host is harboring some unspoken feelings for Spider-Man, some post-fight banter between the two heroes seems to hint at a full-blown romance on the horizon. While some readers were quick to warm up to the idea, Marvel never really followed up on the interaction and that was the end of their romance before it had the chance to start.

Do Captain Marvel and Spider-Man Have Future Potential?

Should Marvel Revisit This Romance?

As much as Spider-Man and Captain Marvel hardly went anywhere with this dynamic, the fact that it’s still remembered fondly enough to produce cosplays and conversations leaves one to wonder if this one is worth revisiting. It’s been nearly two decades since Marvel teased this romance and then went nowhere with it, but it still ranks as highly notable. Clearly, audiences connected with it despite its briefness. Spider-Man and Captain Marvel‘s current storylines couldn’t be further away from each other, so they seldom interact like they do in this cosplay, but maybe Marvel should reconsider keeping them separated and, instead, tap into the magic.
