A newly spotted Easter Egg in Loki’s season 2 premiere appears to reference the X-Men, but is this just a fun nod to the comics or something more? Take a closer look and see what you think right here…

We’re not expecting Marvel Studios to introduce the X-Men until after Avengers: Secret Wars, though there have been at least a couple of references to them since the Infinity Saga ended.

The X-Men: The Animated Series theme played when we learned that Ms. Marvel has a “mutation” in her genes, while it was all but confirmed that Namor is also a mutant. Marvel Studios is also putting the finishing touches to X-Men ’97 and Deadpool 3 is obviously expected to take us back to Fox’s X-Men Universe.

The first episode of Loki season 2 arrived on Disney+ last Thursday and some fans believe the premiere – “Ouroboros” – features a not-so-subtle reference to the X-Men movies.

When the show’s leads head to the Time Variance Authority’s Time Loom, the doorway – which does feature what looks like an “X” on it – opens in almost the exact same manner as the one leading to Cerebro. This could be a coincidence, a bit of fun on the production designer’s part, or a deliberate nod to the X-Men which is meant to play into the fact He Who Remains created the TVA from the remnants of countless worlds.

If so, that door may well have once belonged to Professor X and his X-Men! Don’t bank on this necessarily leading anywhere, though.

Loki season 2 will pick up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

The series stars Tom Hiddleston, Sophia Di Martino, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Wunmi Mosaku, Eugene Cordero, Rafael Casal, Tara Strong, Kate Dickie, Liz Carr, Neil Ellice, with Jonathan Majors, Ke Huy Quan and Owen Wilson.

Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead, Dan Deleeuw and Kasra Farahani direct episodes. The Head Writer is Eric Martin.

The first episode of Loki season 2 is now streaming on Disney+.
