Fall Of X is reaching its final phase, with Marvel already announcing almost everything coming after. The Krakoa Era was considered a revolution for the X-Men, and its ending has been a source of controversy among the X-Men fanbase. Some people are ready for this era of the X-Men to be behind them and others want to return to the era’s lost promise. Fall Of X‘s reception has been pretty mixed, and a big reason for that is the way that so many questions fans had about the Krakoa Era were never answered.

The Fall Of X has felt kind of rushed—partly because various writers have revealed that Marvel slashed the time they had to finish the Krakoa Era. That meant that a lot of information that readers thought they were going to get never materialized. The Krakoa Era raised so many questions, and its ending leaves many of those questions completely unanswered.

X-Men Killed an Iconic Mutant, But Marvel Already Destroyed Its Impact

Marvel’s publicity department ruined the impact of a major Marvel mutant’s death during the X-Men’s Fall of X crossover event

Ms. Marvel is the most successful character introduced in the aborted Inhumans push of the mid-2010s. Ms. Marvel’s decade of success has allowed her to join Marvel’s most popular characters, but her sales started to cool off as the years went by. The character got a second chance at life with her MCU premiere, buoyed by the enthusiasm of actress Iman Vellani. Vellani was a diehard fan of the character and Marvel’s comics, which shone through in her performance. Ms. Marvel also dropped a relatively large change on the character – she was a mutant in the MCU. This fits the original concept for the character from co-creator Sana Amanat, who revealed that she was initially supposed to be a mutant. It was only a matter of time before this change was brought into the comics after its MCU premiere.

Ms. Marvel became a supporting character in the latest volume of The Amazing Spider-Man, which led to her death This moment was extremely controversial with fans, something that has only been compounded by comments from writer Cody Ziglar about MCU head Kevin Feige’s denied involvement Ms. Marvel was resurrected in 2023’s X-Men: The Hellfire Gala #1, where it was revealed that she was a mutant and Xavier had been backing up her memories with Cerebro without knowing it

Ms. Marvel has gotten two miniseries in the Fall Of X era, but neither has revealed Ms. Marvel’s mutant powers. There was speculation that she would get energy-based powers, much like the character in the MCU, but nothing has been revealed. It’s unknown whether Marvel will introduce any new powers for her, but her spot in NYX may finally answer the lingering question.

9 Moira MacTaggert’s Sixth Life Is Still A Complete Mystery Except The Ending

The changes the Krakoa Era made to Moira MacTaggert changed the character forever. Moira was thought to be a human for years, allying with Xavier and using her specialization in mutant genetics to help the X-Men. House Of X #2 would drop a bombshell on readers, revealing that Moira was a mutant with a unique power – every time she died, she was reincarnated at the moment of her birth with all of her memories. This power allowed her to change the timeline multiple times, remembering everything in her life and trying to enact change.

Moira had lived ten lives up to the point that House Of X began Moira learned a terrible secret in all of her lives – that no matter what she or anyone did, mutants always lost to humanity In these lives, Moira was killed by Mystique and Destiny for making a mutant cure, killed multiple times trying to help Xavier, died fighting alongside Magneto, and teamed with Apocalypse in her ninth life, learning how Orchis created Nimrod and allowing Wolverine to kill her with this knowledge

Moira’s sixth life was left intentionally blank in the timeline of her life, and Powers Of X revealed that the ending of that life saw her and Wolverine, the lone survivors of the X-Men, in a world where machines and humanity merged to create Homo Novissima. However, nothing else about this life was revealed throughout the Krakoa Era, and Fall Of X didn’t go into it. This is especially strange, seeing as Dead X-Men had a team of X-Men traveling through Moira’s past life to find the exact moment her mutation revealed itself. Moira’s other lives were well fleshed out except her sixth one.

8 How Exactly Did Nimrod Defeat Juggernaut So Easily Twice?

The Avengers Finally Go to War with the X-Men’s Worst Enemies

Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are finally joining in the fight for the future of mutantkind by taking their long-awaited stand against Orchis.

Juggernaut has a reputation for being one of Marvel’s most dangerous strongmen. Juggernaut gained the power of the dark god Cytorrak, gaining monumental strength and durability, but also another amazing ability – Juggernaut is unstoppable once he gets moving. Juggernaut has faced off against a who’s who of Marvel’s toughest heroes and villains and has even been able to defeat the Hulk, which is no small deed. Juggernaut’s power level has fluctuated, but in recent years, he has been traveling the world and bringing together every artifact from Cytorrak, melting them into a new armor that has made him more powerful than ever.

Juggernaut asked to join Krakoa, but at first, Xavier wouldn’t let him because he was a human Juggernaut joined the Legionaries then was chosen to join the newest incarnation of the X-Men at the third Hellfire Gala Most of this team was wiped out by Nimrod, who was able to beat down Juggernaut, capturing him and imprisoning him in an Orchis facility. ShadowKat later freed Juggernaut, but Nimrod was able to defeat him again

Both of Juggernaut’s losses to Nimrod happened off-panel. It would make sense if Juggernaut were a mutant since Nimrod is well-known for having the technology to inhibit mutant powers. However, Juggernaut’s powers are mystical in nature. While Orchis did have a magical arm, it was never established if they did something to Nimrod to allow him to inhibit Juggernaut’s power. Nimrod easily defeating Juggernaut twice – something that even the Hulk has a problem with – needed to be explained, and it never was.

7 The Phalanx’s Relation To Dominions Was Completely Dropped By Fall Of X

The Phalanx was introduced in the ’90s. They’re basically the Borg combined with techno-organic Marvel aliens like the Technarchy. The Phalanx starred in several X-Men stories and later were roped into the Annihilation sequels. They were prolific killers, destroying any resistance and assimilating what was left over. They had been missing for years when Powers Of X brought them back to prominence, with writer Jonathan Hickman redefining the alien race.

The Phalanx traveled the universe before making their way to Earth to assimilate Homo Novissima, a posthuman race that combined man and machine The Phalanx’s data cores were said to be inside black holes, putting them outside normal spacetime The Phalanx was thought to be part of the lifecycle of Dominions, godlike intelligence that existed outside space and time

Dominions became a massive deal as the Krakoa Era continued, but the Phalanx was missing. Rise Of The Powers Of X #1 showed an alternate universe where Orchis made Mars into a Worldmind to call on a Dominion but left out the Phalanx. This change was never explained, and the relationship between the Phalanx and Dominions was completely left behind, leaving readers with many unanswered questions.

Apocalypse got a major glow-up in the Krakoa Era. Krakoa welcomed all mutant villains onto the island and Apocalypse embraced the mutant nation like no one else. While villains turned citizens like Sebastian Shaw and Mister Sinister used Krakoa to broaden their power base, Apocalypse became a true leader and teacher. Apocalypse taught mutants ancient mutant magic and helped lead the battle against Amenth, revealing his history with Apocalypse.

Apocalypse was a citizen of Okkara, the first mutant nation thousands of years ago He met his wife Genesis there and the two of them had children, becoming leaders of Okkara and leading them in the war against the demonic armies of Amenth This war resulted in the sundering of Okkara, creating Krakoa and Arakko, with Genesis leading an army of mutants on Arakko to Otherworld to hold off the forces of Amenth

X Of Swords saw the return of the mutants of Arakko on the side of Amenth, with the only thing standing between them and the Earth being the mutants of Krakoa. Apocalypse helped win the battle and brokered the surrender of Arakko by going back with his wife and children. Apocalypse was gone from the end of X Of Swords until Before The Fall: The Heralds Of Apocalypse, which led to Genesis attacking Planet Arakko and Apocalypse standing against her. There was a lot of time between those two events and it seemed strange that Apocalypse’s time with his family – and the rift that formed between them – was never explored in more detail.

5 Where Is Captain Britain?

Elizabeth Braddock has held many titles, but she’s been Captain Britain for the entirety of the Krakoa Era. Braddock mostly dealt with Otherworld during the Krakoa Era as part of her remit as Captain Britain. After the third Hellfire Gala massacre, she returned to Earth to fight for her people, battling Orchis ally Selene alongside X-Corp. However, before that, she entered into a relationship with Rachel Summers, now known as Askani, where the problem comes in.

Charles Xavier recruited Askani to use her chronokinetic powers to help find out exactly when Moira MacTaggert’s mutant powers manifested Askani sent the resurrected team of X-Men from the Hellfire Gala through Moira’s lives to try to find the information they needed Xavier ended up shooting Askani in the back

Captain Britain and Askani have been basically inseparable. It doesn’t feel right that the two of them would be away from each other, and even though Xavier was trying to keep secrets from Askani, he would easily be able to block a telepath of Captain Britain’s power if she insisted on coming along, which she would have. Captain Britain has also been absent elsewhere since defeating Selene, which is strange since the X-Men need all the help they can get in their battles against Orchis. Captain Britain’s absence is pretty glaring to anyone who has paid attention to the Krakoa Era.

4 Professor X Has Gone Off The Deep End Without A Lot Of Explanation

The Krakoa Era has taken Professor X on an interesting yet depressing journey. Things started well enough, with Xavier taking the reins of Krakoa alongside Magneto, all while keeping Moira MacTaggert’s secret from the people of Krakoa. Xavier’s pragmatism and secrets during the Krakoa Era hurt his power immensely, and his possession by Mister Sinister in the run-up to Sins Of Sinister was another problem for him. Eventually, he was cleared of suspicion in time for the third Hellfire Gala, where he surrendered to Orchis and used his powers to drive the Krakoans through portals to an unknown fate. Rogue rescued him before he was killed by Stasis, thinking that he had signed the death warrants of his people and asking to be left on Krakoa.

Xavier singlehandedly kept Orchis from looting Krakoa, manifesting limited telekinetic abilities and slaughtering every human who stepped foot on the island He learned that Sinister was still a part of him and the two of them came up with a plan to stop the Dominion that Sinister had encountered from being born Xavier passed his Sinister possession to Doug Ramsey, recruited Askani, Mother Righteous, and Rasputin IV and then took a Krakoan No-Place out of time and space

Sinister had talked Xavier into killing the young Moira, but in the end, Askani could get through to him in Rise Of The Powers Of X #3. Then he shot and killed her at the end of the issue. Things got worse in Fall Of The House Of X #4when Xavier offered to help Orchis destroy humanity if they’d let mutants survive and even destroyed a US spaceship that would attack Sentinel City. At some point, Xavier went full supervillain in a way he never had before, and none of the Fall Of X books have given a good reason why. Xavier has gone through a lot, but none of it would make him team with Nimrod and kill innocent humans, even if this was part of some plan.

3 It Was Never Explained Why Doctor Stasis Took Command Of Orchis

Iron Man’s Family Reunion is More Horrifying Than His Fight Against Orchis

Iron Man’s war against Orchis lands him right in the middle of one of Marvel’s most harrowing family reunions of all time.

Jonathan Hickman introduced the Orchis Initiative in House Of X. They were the ultimate anti-mutant organization, consisting of members of SHIELD, STRIKE, SWORD, HAMMER, AIM, Hydra, and every other secret organization. Their mission was to destroy mutantkind if they reached a certain level of power, and once Krakoa was founded, the organization came to power.

The leader of Orchis was Killian Devo, a STRIKE agent Omega Sentinel convinced that he came from an alternate future where mutants had destroyed humanity, which caused him to activate the Orchis Initiative Dr. Alia Gregor headed the science wing of Orchis and created a Nimrod unit based on her slain husband, Erasmus Mendel Doctor Stasis, a clone of Nathaniel Essex, was revealed to be a member of Orchis and in charge of trying to destroy the X-Men

At some point, Devo and Gregor stopped being the most important members of Orchis and Doctor Stasis basically became the Initiative’s leader. Stasis started making all the important decisions, and Devo and Gregor completely disappeared until their deaths in Fall Of The House Of X and X-Men (Vol. 6). At no point was Stasis’s taking over Orchis explained, and it mostly felt like a decision made by writer Gerry Duggan, who created Stasis.

2 How Did Nathaniel Essex Become Enigma?

Mister Sinister became more important than ever in the Krakoa Era. Sinister’s glory days were long behind at the beginning of the era, but things started to pick up with writers like Hickman, Zeb Wells, and Kieron Gillen in charge of the character. Eventually, a new wrinkle was added to the lore of Mister Sinister – that he was one of four clones of Nathaniel Essex. Sinister had always been considered Essex, but this wasn’t the case. The other three clones – Mother Righteous, Doctor Stasis, and Orbis Stellaris – all appeared throughout the Krakoa Era.

Essex created the clones at some point after he met Apocalypse in the late 1800s Sinister was all about mutants, Stasis mastered the human genome and wanted revenge against mutants, Mother Righteous mastered magic, and Orbis Stellaris took his genetic engineering skills to the stars, creating armies for various alien empires Essex was somehow able to copy his mind into an AI at some point and became Enigma

The last part raises the biggest question – how did Nathaniel Essex make himself into an AI? Essex was a master geneticist and a genius, but to make himself into an AI he’d need way more knowledge and equipment than he had access to. While advanced technology did exist in the 19th century Marvel Universe in the enclaves of the Inhumans, Eternals, and other secret places, Essex would have had to master computer programming at a high level to be able to make himself into an AI, which doesn’t seem possible. It’s a question that no one has even tried answering, but one that has many X-Men fans scratching their heads.

1 What Is The Point Of Orbis Stellaris?

The Dead X-Men Spare the Life of One of Marvel’s Most Corrupt Villains

The Dead X-Men ultimately decide against killing one of their greatest adversaries — even if it means risking the entire world over their own morals.

The five forms of Nathaniel Essex were a big change to mutant lore, completely changing what readers thought they knew about Mister Sinister. Sinister, Mother Righteous, Doctor Stasis, and Enigma have all become very important parts of Fall Of X, with Sinister and Righteous failing at their plans before helping Xavier against Moira MacTaggert and Stasis commanding Orchis. That leaves Orbis Stellaris, who has barely appeared at all in the Krakoa Era.

Orbis Stellaris first appeared in SWORD (Vol. 2) #6 and was established as a geneticist who created mercenaries His mercenaries were used in an assassination attempt on Xandra, the Empress of the Shi’Ar and daughter of Lilandra and Xavier Orbis Stellaris’s identity was revealed when a group of X-Men led by Cable went after him

Stellaris showed up in Before The Fall: The Sinister Four and has pretty much done nothing else of note other than going with Stasis to try to kill Mother Righteous in X-Men Forever #1. He appeared in Dead X-Men #4 in an alternate timeline where it seemed like he was about to become a Dominion, but that’s pretty much it. There has been no point to the character, and he’s had no bearing on the events of Fall Of X. Bizarrely, no reason has been given for his existence.

X-Men

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.

Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world’s second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel’s most popular and important franchises.
