Zack Snyder is now free of the weight of creating an expansive DCEU and had been doing his own thing for the past couple of years. While the director does not seem to be keen to enter the realm of big studio films anytime soon, Snyder fans would love to see him direct a Marvel flick sometime soon. His unique directorial style, understanding of complex action and emotional depth, and ability to draw out great performances from his cast make him a compelling choice for the job.

While that might not be possible anytime soon, Snyder’s past comments about Hulk do make him a good choice to direct a standalone Hulk movie in the future.

Zack Snyder‘s directorial style might be different from Marvel’s, but it sure isn’t too different from Marvel Comics and the way the character is represented in print. For years fans have found issues with the MCU’s portrayal of Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), calling them out for softening a character as ferocious and formidable as the Green Goliath.

Not only do several Marvel fans love the 2008 Edward Norton starrer The Incredible Hulk movie, feeling it was closer to the character’s comic book iteration and thus, have been waiting for a Hulk similar to that.

Snyder, who is known to make characteristically dark and gloomy features would certainly know how to handle such a gloomy character and his mythos. Despite being criticized for his dark take on the DC universe, Snyder’s DC movies are well-executed and visually stunning.

Furthermore, the filmmaker is already a fan of Marvel comics and Hulk, as he revealed in his interview with WIRED.

“I do like Marvel. I like Marvel movies, I like Marvel comics. Hulk has always been one of my favorites, forever.”

With Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk only being a side character in pretty much every Marvel film and his origins yet to be explored, Snyder would be the best choice to direct a standalone Hulk film in the future.

Why a Hulk Movie Cannot Happen?

Despite being an integral part of the MCU and one of the original Avengers, Hulk has not gotten a standalone movie. Instead, his character development and story have been explored with each successive MCU movie.

The lack of a Hulk solo movie however is more of a business issue than a creative one. Apparently, the rights to the character Hulk are still with Universal. Not only does Universal carry the first right of refusal but any profits made by Marvel Studios on a standalone Hulk project will have to be shared with Universal.

With The Incredible Hulk having been released in 2008 and the rights supposed to revert to Marvel Studios after 15 years, Marvel would have gotten the rights back by 2023. But no announcement has been made and Mark Ruffalo at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival had revealed that a standalone Hulk movie had no chance of happening.

While Snyder would certainly be a great choice to direct a Ruffalo-starrer Hulk movie for Kevin Feige’s MCU, the possibilities of it happening anytime soon look bleak.

The Incredible Hulk and the MCU franchise can be streamed on Disney+.
