The X-Men’s resident con-man has a silver tongue, but it’s actually the most powerful tongue in the Marvel Universe for an entirely different reason.

10 “Your initials are LSD?”

All-New X-Factor Vol 1 #15 by Peter David, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Lee Loughridge, Cory Petit, and Katie Kubert

A funny comment that shows that Gambit always has a sense of humor, this question was posed to teammate Polaris. She has the given name of Lorna Sally Dane, giving Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds a run for her money in terms of “LSD” names. The quote proves that Gambit’s less-than-serious worldview is a big component of his charm, as he’s ready to drop a joke or quip at any time.

Yet, Gambit and Polaris find the time to banter back and forth, with the Ragin’ Cajun delivering this silly question.

In the comic, Red Skull has tainted the minds of superheroes to destroy Washington D.C., necessitating the unaffected X-Force to come to the rescue. With even the Avengers under the spell of Red Skull, the members of X-Force more than have their hands full. Yet, Gambit and Polaris find the time to banter back and forth, with the Ragin’ Cajun delivering this silly question. As high as the stakes are, Gambit doesn’t have to completely lose his sense of humor as seen in this comic.

9 “I feel like Kitty is trolling us. Makin’ us babysit an egg on our honeymoon. This ain’t s’posed to be some high school health class project.”

Mr. and Mrs. X Vol 1 #2 by Kelly Thompson, Jan Bazaldua, Frank D’Armata, and Travis Lanham

Gambit and Rogue are one of Marvel’s most iconic couples. Given their long history, it is not surprising that Gambit has laid on the charm with Rogue through clever lines or by making her laugh. He uses his way with words to quip this line to his new bride when Kitty Pryde tasks Rogue and Gambit with protecting a coveted package. He likens the protected package to the egg that high school health classes give to students as a lesson and simulation of taking care of a fragile being like a baby. It’s crummy enough that Remy and Anna Marie have to take care of some mysterious object that they know nothing about, and on their honeymoon of all times. To make matters worse, Deadpool ends up crashing the love birds’ getaway, making for an eventful if not awkward honeymoon.

8 “The gentleman assumes the pot is his to win… but I have a literal ace up my sleeve.”

X-Men Vol 2 #5 by John Byrne, Jim Lee, Joe Rubinstein, Art Thibert, Bob Wiacek, and Scott Williams

An expert at cards, with a gift for card throwing as well as his habit of charging playing cards with his kinetic energy powers to form explosives, Gambit knows his way around a deck. As a result, this quote is in perfect line with the character of Gambit, but of course, expressed in his typical charming way. Likewise, Gambit has confidence in his abilities, feeling strong in his expertise. In X-Men Vol 2 #5, the X-Men are split into two different colored teams, Blue and Gold. On the Blue Team, Gambit works alongside Wolverine, Jubilee, Cyclops, Beast, Psylocke, and Rogue. When Wolverine is kidnapped by The Hand and Omega Red during a basketball game in the previous issue, Gambit and his fellow team members try to rescue Logan, but they must defeat and escape The Hand first.

7 “I know you, and after what happened you’re gon’ try and push me away as hard as you can. And with dat super-strength of yours, it’ll be real hard. And I’m telling ya right now. I’m not havin’ it.”

Mr. and Mrs. X Vol 1 #5 by Kelly Thompson, Jan Bazaldua, and Frank D’Armata

Making his point clear, Gambit does so in the most charming way possible, with this line almost more befitting of a romance movie than a comic book.

Gambit has a gift of getting to the heart of things. With training in the Thieves Guild, Gambit knows how to read people, something that pays off in his sometimes complicated relationship with his love, Rogue. He is able to decipher Rogue’s distance as a result of her past and knows her well enough that as strong as she is, he won’t let her push him away. Making his point clear, Gambit does so in the most charming way possible, with this line almost more befitting of a romance movie than a comic book. Moreover, with an off and on relationship for the ages, Rogue and Gambit bring their own issues into the partnership that stem from tragic circumstances in their pasts. However, as this quote illustrates, Gambit won’t let her get rid of him.

6 “Admit it, mon ami, we actu’ly make a pretty good team… when we ain’t tryin’ t’kill each other.”

X-Men Vol 2 #47 by Scott Lobdell, Andy Kubert, Cam Smith, and Jesse Delperdang

Gambit says this apt quote to Bishop when they have defeated the antagonistic, giant creatures, Gog and MaGog, in order to protect the X-Babies. Gambit and Bishop have their tensions and disputes during their time together on the X-Men. This is largely due to Bishop thinking that Gambit was the traitor behind the doom of the X-Men in Bishop’s future. This even comes up in this issue when Gambit makes it clear to Bishop that he would never betray the X-Men, although Bishop doesn’t truly buy what Gambit is saying.

While Bishop’s suspicions are proven wrong eventually, the pair are often at each other’s throats, making the fact that they work exceptionally well together in their fight against Gog and MaGog all the more revealing about the potential the crime fighting duo has as a team. The quote exemplifies Gambit’s ability to deliver the truth but in a palatable and charming way.

5 “Relax Darling’. I wrestled alligators before I could write my own name. This just feels like goin’ home.”

Gambit Vol 5 #8 by James Asmus, Pasqual Ferry, David Baldeón, and Clay Mann

Raised in New Orleans, Remy LeBeau is no stranger to alligators and the bayou. The proud Cajun takes great delight in being from the Crescent City, which is home to many creatures both benign and dangerous. While the alligators back home are fearsome creatures, Gambit underestimates the threat that the creatures of Gambit Vol 5 #8 pose.

When Gambit is tasked with going to the Forever City, he sees that the evolution engine is still at work, especially when he notices the ominous sign of gigantic claw marks on a wall. To his surprise and unease, the machine has been transforming the local wildlife as well as some of the students of the E.S.U into evolved versions of themselves, making the animals all the more deadly. While Gambit may be well versed in gator wrestling, the advanced forms of the animals of Forever City offer a much harder challenge.

Anyone who has the word “killing” in their name just spells disaster, especially when world domination is at their fingertips.

The stakes are high when M.O.D.O.K (Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing) gets his hands on the Scroll of Vishota. These powerful papers can help whoever holds them achieve world domination. Anyone who has the word “killing” in their name just spells disaster, especially when world domination is at their fingertips. It’s a good thing that the Champions are hot on the tails of the villain, with Angel, Black Widow, Ghost Rider, Hercules, and Iceman to the rescue. Contributing his powers and expertise to the team’s mission is Gambit, who delivers this insightful line to M.O.D.O.K. This retort exemplifies Gambit’s penchant for not wasting words, as he’s able to explain his thoughts in quick and concise statements, but in an interesting and alluring way.

2 “Miracle? No thanks, jus’ performed one.”

Gambit Vol 3 #3 by Fabian Nicieza, Steve Skroce, and Shannon Blanchard

One could never accuse Gambit of being falsely modest. Remy has always been confident enough to take ownership of his victories, perhaps sometimes a little too much, as this quote of his suggests. In this standalone story, Gambit is indebted to a mysterious figure known as New Son and ends up stealing for him. This eventually gets Gambit mixed up in an international kerfuffle when he gets on the bad side of the group A.S.K.E.W.

There is a lot going on in this issue, with Gambit coming into contact with Latverian ne’er-do-wells, the Mengo Brothers. In an action-packed sequence, Gambit says this quote after he has saved two people from a building that was going to fall on them. As a result, the quote may seem arrogant on the surface, but given that he did pretty much perform a miracle, it’s not completely wrong of him.

1 “I be the thief, chère……and there you go off stealin’ my heart.”

Rogue Vol 1 #2 by Howard Mackie, Mike Wieringo, Terry Austin, and Dana Moreshead

Gambit could be said to possess many qualities, with a silver tongue among one of his most well-known characteristics. A smooth talker through and through, he has made many a woman in the comics swoon over him. None has ever come close, however, to the relationship Gambit formed with Rogue. Sharing tumultuous upbringings and Southern backgrounds, it seems like they are a match made in heaven. However, they have had their issues and are not always on the same page.

In the beginning, though, rather than Gambit being the charmer, he was the one who was charmed by Rogue for a change, making it crystal clear in this quote to her. He delivers his feelings for her in a clever and charming way that encapsulates the character’s nature and personality as well as a little of his history.Consequently, the quote communicates a lot despite being only one sentence long, perfectly summing up what makes Gambit the X-Men‘s ultimate charmer.

Gambit

Gambit (AKA Remy Etienne LeBeau) is a card-throwing, energy-manipulating mutant who debuted in the Uncanny X-Men comic series. Formerly a sly thief/con man, Gambit is often portrayed as a charming, smooth-talking man with a strong love of his Cajun heritage. His mutant gene bestows him with the ability to harness kinetic energy, where he can channel it into various objects (in his case, usually playing cards) to strike his enemies, and he often uses a bo staff for close encounters. Gambit is closely associated with fellow X-Men team member Rogue, whom he eventually marries after a tumultuous relationship. On a path of redemption, many of the X-Men are wary of him at first but eventually warmly accept him as one of their own.
