Summary

Spider-Man’s lack of comic book precedent for joining the Young Avengers isn’t a major issue for the MCU. Including Spider-Man would provide a new opportunity for his character and offer insight from his experience. Alternatively, the MCU could introduce Miles Morales as another Spider-Man for the Young Avengers team.

As one of the younger MCU heroes, Spider-Man seems like a prime candidate to be in the Young Avengers. One thing seemingly holding Tom Holland’s Spider-Man back from joining the likes of Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel is the lack of comic book precedent for him to be on the MCU’s Young Avengers team. Typically, when Peter Parker joins a team in the comics, it’s the Avengers or maybe the Defenders, but never the Young Avengers. Of course, the MCU isn’t afraid to take liberties with the comics, so Peter could still be on the team.

The reasons Spider-Man never joined the team in the comics isn’t really as big of an issue for the upcoming MCU movies or shows where the Young Avengers could appear. Besides, Spider-Man joining the Young Avengers would present a new opportunity for the MCU’s Peter Parker, and he probably wouldn’t mind getting to know more superheroes his own age now that his identity has been wiped from everyone’s memory. Of course, if Marvel doesn’t want to include Peter Parker in the Young Avengers, they could still include a different Spider-Man on the team.

The MCU is getting closer to assembling a new generation of superheroes. These are the Young Avengers that have already been set up for Phase 4.

Why Spider-Man Isn’t On The Young Avengers Team In The Comics

In the comics, the Young Avengers is largely made up of legacy heroes. These are heroes who have taken up the mantle of an older hero, like Kate Bishop as Hawkeye. Alternatively, they are young versions of older heroes like Iron Lad or Hulkling. As the first Spider-Man, Peter doesn’t really fit into the same category as the legacy heroes. In Marvel Comics, Peter Parker is also quite a bit older than the Young Avengers and is much more likely to team up with other adult superheroes.

The MCU team seems like it will be an amalgamation of Young Avengers like Kate Bishop and members of a similar team called the Champions. The Champions were also young heroes, with some legacy picks like Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The Champions actually did have Spider-Man on the roster, but not Peter Parker. As the legacy Spider-Man, Miles Morales was chosen for the team instead. However, the MCU doesn’t have the same issue as the comics since Peter is around the same age as Kate Bishop and could easily join the team without seeming out of place.

Why The MCU Should Include Spider-Man In Their Young Avengers Anyway

Just because Peter Parker was never in the Young Avengers in the comics doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be on the team in the MCU. One excellent reason for Marvel to include him is that he is the most experienced young hero in the MCU. He has fought with the Avengers and would be able to provide insight into how to work as a team. This is also a new angle for the MCU’s version of Spider-Man, as he has usually been reliant on a mentor. Putting him with less experienced heroes would give him a chance to step up.

Because the MCU doesn’t have too many young heroes, adding Spider-Man to the team would save Marvel having to introduce too many new characters. This way, Marvel could avoid short-changing any characters like they did Hawkeye during his introduction in The Avengers. Later Avengers films like Avengers: Infinity War only used existing heroes, and benefited from not having to spend time developing new characters. Having Ms. Marvel recruit as many existing young heroes as possible would allow the Young Avengers movie to dedicate most of its time to the story and relationships between existing characters.

Or The MCU Could Have Another Spider-Man Join The Young Avengers

If Marvel decides they don’t want Peter Parker on the Young Avengers team, that doesn’t mean they can’t have a different Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Homecoming has already alluded to the existence of Marvel’s other Spider-Man when Aaron Davis tells Peter Parker he has a nephew. In the comics, Davis’ nephew is Miles Morales, the second Spider-Man. Marvel could decide to introduce Miles as a part of the team, allowing them to keep Peter isolated for longer so as not to walk back Spider-Man: No Way Home’s ending.

Miles was on The Champions with Ms. Marvel, and he is a legacy hero. If Marvel wants to keep the MCU more true to the comic book Young Avengers, then Miles Morales might be the right Spider-Man for the team. As of now, the only two members that are seemingly confirmed for the team are Kate Bishop and Kamala Khan, though The Marvels also teased Cassie Lang’s recruitment. While there might be enough Young Avengers without including Peter Parker, none of them share his experience in the MCU so he’d be an excellent pick to either join or lead the team.
