Marvel’s Weapon X-Men reveals which superpowered couple couldn’t keep it together. All while making the world of Earth X even more dour than it already was.

Weapon X-Men #2 opens to a flashback of better days on Earth-9997, better known as the reality of Earth X. As the Logan of Earth X explains, he and Jean Grey found a fiery romance with one another after her relationship with Scott Summers fell apart. When Logan saw himself and Jean drifting apart, he enlisted the help of Doctor Miles Warren to suppress his powers in the hopes that it would bring them closer together. Instead, it only drove another wedge between them which, tragically, they could not overcome.

Introduced in the same issue alongside the rest of the eponymous world of 1999’s Earth X #0 by writers Jim Krueger and Alex Ross and artist John Paul Leon, the Logan of Earth-9997 is just one of countless iconic characters whose stories were upended throughout the course of the original series. Apart from various changes made to the core tenets of Marvel Comics history involving the Celestials, the world of Earth X was thrown into abject chaos when Terrigen Mists were released across the globe by the Inhuman leader Black Bolt.

This event caused mass mutations among the human population of Earth, resulting in widespread chaos and numerous superpowered conflicts. Earth X‘s story has continued to play out in subsequent sequel series over the years, including 2000’s Universe X and 2002’s Paradise X. Most recently, the heroes and villains of Earth-9997 returned in 2020’s Marvels X, which served as a prequel to the rest of the series.

Wolverine

Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk #180, where he battled the Jade Giant to a standstill, before joining Marvel’s X-Men in 1975. Since then, the short-tempered berserker with unbreakable claws has proven himself as one of Marvel’s most popular characters. The mutant hero was also the backbone of the X-Men film franchise, which ran from 2000 to 2020, and critics consider his solo film, Logan, one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Known as an unstoppable tank who can cut through anything, Wolverine isn’t technically one of Marvel’s most powerful heroes but he’s one of the deadliest characters on their roster. Even villains like Magneto and the Juggernaut have learned to be wary of Wolverine’s claws.
