Sony may be developing an R-rated Venom movie in their Spider-Man villain cinematic universe for a grittier take on the character. The Venom films have been successful by being rougher around the edges compared to the standard Marvel fare. An animated R-rated Spider-Man project focused on Venom could potentially give fans the most comics-accurate portrayal of the character.

A Venom R-rated movie within their Spider-Man villain cinematic universe may be developing at Sony, moving the iconic character to a different medium for an edgier product.

While Sony’s Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films have been highly successful and are canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the company also has a cinematic universe headed by the Venom films, which star Tom Hardy in the titular role. While they got off to a rocky start with critics, Venom movies are a perfect throwback to 2000s superhero movies and have been quite successful by being rougher around the edges than the standard Marvel fare.

While Tom Hardy shared a first look at the Venom 3 scriptin 2021, and the film is set for a 2024 release, a recent rumor suggests that the studio’s next project starring the trilogy’s protagonist is already in the works in a way fans have been waiting for. CanWeGetSomeToast claims an animated R-rated Spider-Man project focused on the Venom character is currently in development at Sony, potentially marking the first R-rated Spider-Man project fans get their hands on from the company. While details are still pretty light on the potential project, fans are excited, as the news seems to have gotten fans of the character talking online.

The idea of an R-rated project featuring Venom and potentially involving a clash with Spider-Man would allow for what would easily be the most comics-accurate portrayal of the symbiote warrior that fans will ever get, negating both the constraints of lower ratings and the live-action medium to show the carnage (pun intended) that Venom and his ilk can inflict and the struggle that Spider-Man must go through to come out on top every time. While Venom and Let There Be Carnage are often compared, an animated feature would up the ante far beyond what either film put out. However, fans of the film series will not be turned off by the rumored project, as it has vastly different appeals. Hardy’s performance in the lead role is one loss that the animated series will likely take from the get-go, as the star seems content to tie up his commitments to the character.

While the consensus is that Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs don’t work for myriad reasons, Venom has managed to carve out a fanbase beyond that noose, making the idea of a no-holds-barred version of the character with the extra creative freedom afforded by animation appealing.

Venom 3 is set for theatrical release on November 8, 2024.
