Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is expected to finally explain the confusing rules of time travel in the MCU, which have become muddled in subsequent projects. The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has only added to the confusion of time travel, introducing different methods in various shows and movies. Kang the Conqueror being set up as the main villain in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty suggests that the film will delve deeper into time travel and ensure that it is easy to understand and follow for audiences.

The rules of time travel in the MCU have become very confusing, and only Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has the chance to finally explain them in detail. Marvel Studios introduced the concept of time travel to the MCU during 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, as Earth’s Mightiest Heroes embarked on the Time Heist to reverse the devastation caused by Thanos in Infinity War. While the MCU’s rules of time travel were explained clearly in Endgame by Bruce Banner and Tony Stark, subsequent projects in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga have confused the concept. Marvel Studios would be clever to lay out clear rules for time travel, but this can’t happen until Phase 6.

While Banner and Stark explained time travel in Avengers: Endgame, many still expressed confusion at the huge amount of information being unloaded. This was only heightened after an elderly Steve Rogers returned from the past – or another timeline – to pass the Captain America mantle on to Sam Wilson. The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has only added to this, with instances of time travel cropping up in Loki, Ms. Marvel, What If…?, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, all introducing different methods of time travel to the MCU. While Marvel Studios may be trying to lay out a clearer explanation, only Avengers: The Kang Dynasty can actually solve this problem.

Phase 5’s Loki season 2 has been trying to ensure that audiences don’t associate time travel in the MCU with confusion and complexities, having characters able to quickly move from one time to another by using TemPads and Time Doors. Unfortunately, the fact that Marvel Studios is using a series on Disney+ to do this may act as a disadvantage to more casual viewers, as not everybody will be watching Loki or keeping up to date with the MCU’s TV shows. This means that the MCU’s time travel problems can only truly be fixed in a feature film, and there may be none better than 2026’s Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

Arguably, Marvel Studios doesn’t really have a choice but to explain time travel in more detail in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, as the film’s expected primary antagonist is the master of time travel. Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror’s ability to travel through time and between timelines is an integral part of his story, and the Avengers are suspected to be pitted against Kang the Conqueror and the Council of Kangs in Phase 6. This potentially-epic storyline hinges on audiences finding the concept of time travel exciting and easy-to-follow, so Avengers: The Kang Dynasty must ensure that there is no distracting confusion surrounding the idea.

Why The MCU Has Already Teased Avengers 5 Will Fix Its Messy Time Travel Rules

Avengers: The Kang Dynasty may fully explore the MCU’s time travel, but Marvel Studios has already begun to set this up, most prominently in Loki. Tom Hiddleston’s God of Mischief was able to embark on his adventure with the TVA because of the Avengers’ time traveling in Endgame, and the series’ constant use of quick-and-easy time travel has helped to alleviate some of the confusion. Loki has helped to lessen the impact of time travel in the MCU, making it not so much of a big deal, which will make it easier for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty to simply jump into the action in the MCU’s Phase 6, able to use some of the pre-existing simplifications put in place.
