Summary

Marvel’s Halloween watch list includes unconventional choices like Ant-Man and Shang-Chi, catering to different levels of scary content for fans. The MCU has started to explore horror elements through TV shows like Werewolf by Night and the upcoming Blade movie. Marvel’s future plans suggest more horror content with Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Marvel Zombies.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has featured some scary and tense moments over more than a decade, and Marvel has now shared the list of projects from the universe that make for an entertaining Halloween watch party. While almost every MCU movie has delivered on the patented Marvel formula of engaging action, stunning visuals, classic comedy, and entertaining characters, not many have completely dived into horror. The genre has not been used to its full potential in the MCU yet, but the tide does appear to be changing in recent years.

Through Disney+, which allowed the MCU timeline to get more experimental, there have been some horror elements across the MCU TV shows, with a full-on horror special in Werewolf by Night. On the movie side, Marvel has also moved into a more Halloween-friendly terrain, with notable horror director Sam Raimi coming back to superhero movies for the first time since he and Tobey Maguire finished their Spider-Man trilogy back in 2007, with Raimi directing 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was perhaps the scariest an MCU movie has ever been. While some MCU movies and shows have horror elements, Marvel’s official Halloween watch list includes some unconventional choices.

Marvel’s Halloween Watch List Includes Some Unusual Choices

Marvel has released the MCU’s official Halloween watch list, and it includes some surprising choices.

The MCU’s first Special Presentation on Disney+, Werewolf by Night, was a black and white horror event that was inspired by Universal’s classic monster films. While that project and others such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the animated What If…? — the latter of which contained a horror episode that has led to a full-on R-rated animated spinoff, Marvel Zombies, to move forward — make sense, some choices like Ant-Man and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are quite unusual. Check out the full official MCU Halloween watch list below:

Ant-Man Ant-Man and the Wasp Avengers: Age of Ultron Avengers: Endgame Doctor Strange Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Guardians of the Galaxy Iron Man 3 Loki Moon Knight Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Thor: The Dark World Thor: Love and Thunder Thor: Ragnarok WandaVision Werewolf By Night What If…?

Why MCU’s Halloween Watch List Is A Perfect Selection

While unconventional, Marvel’s official MCU Halloween watch list is actually perfect. There are a few picks for MCU fans who want to get more classic horror stories, while the list also intentionally includes choices that are not as scary, as not all Marvel fans might want to watch a truly frightening project for Halloween. By curating its MCU Halloween watch list the way it has, Marvel Studios covers all its bases, offering different levels of scary content for fans who want to dip their toes into a little Marvel horror for the Halloween season. The projects included have different genres with some horror elements, helping Marvel achieve its goal.

The MCU so far is lacking in terms of true horror content, but that should change in the future. Werewolf by Night opened the door for the MCU to explore more of its horror side from the comics, with the upcoming Blade set to be the first MCU movie to play with that. Following WandaVision, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is going to continue to explore Marvel’s magical side, which could include more horror elements in a similar way to Raimi’s Doctor Strange sequel. With all signs pointing that the supernatural Marvel team, the Midnight Suns, is set to debut in the future, more Marvel Cinematic Universe horror should be on the way.
