Warning: contains spoilers for Marvel’s Voices Infinity Comic #100There’s a new Juggernaut in town… and Justin Jin’s “Kid Juggernaut” couldn’t be more different than Cain Marko. Cursed with the strength of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, Kid Juggernaut has a lot to prove, and a villainous legacy to combat. As he joins the newest Avengers Academy in the pages of Marvel’s Voices #100, Justin will discover what it means to be a true hero, and the power it takes to resist corruption.

Jin Joon-Sung, or Justin, is a 17-year-old Korean-Canadian introduced in Marvel’s Voices #100 – from writer Anthony Oliviera with art from Minkyu Jung – who must grapple with becoming Cyttorak’s newest Juggernaut host.

Justin Jin’s origin story, detailing how he finds a shard of Cyttorak’s Crimson Gem and gains an awesome new Juggernaut costume, will be explored in the upcoming Kid Juggernaut: Marvel’s Voices from writer Emily Kim with artists Minkyu Jung and Michael Wiggam.

After a shard of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak fell into the hands of Justin Jin, a young Korean-Canadian student and baker, he’s now cursed to become a human juggernaut. But while the demon Cyttorak usually seeks champions who are full of rage, Justin is a kind and gentle soul. What use Cyttorak has for him is yet to be seen…

Kid Juggernaut Has The Endorsement Of The X-Men And Avengers

Cain Marko, brother of Charles Xavier, severed his connection to the demonic Elder God Cyttorak in 2020’s Juggernaut, but retained his powers through the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak. Juggernaut spent decades as a major X-Men villain, but became a beloved hero during the Krakoan Age, fighting for the nation of Krakoa even though he himself is not a mutant. Unfortunately, while a villain, Cain murdered Justin Jin’s Juggernaut grandfather Jin Taiko in New Excalibur #15, to claim the Juggernaut power for himself. Justin has a personal, intimate connection to the Juggernaut and a legacy he wants to uphold.

Justin Jin has been a hero since the moment he became Juggernaut, in direct opposition to Cain Marko’s origin. Kid Juggernaut is also approached by the X-Men, who are proud of his heroism, as well as Miles Morales and Captain Marvel, who recruit him into the upcoming Avengers Academy team. Justin and Cain’s heroic careers couldn’t have started more differently, and it will be fascinating to see how this difference is explored. Another interesting difference is that Justin is an out gay man, and there have always been subtextual hints that Cain is queer as well, and in a long-term romantic relationship with his “partner” Black Tom.

Cyttorak’s Interest In Justin Jin Remains A Tense Mystery

Cyttorak is a truly vicious demonic entity, known for possessing humans through his Crimson Gem so he can feast on the pain and destruction they cause. In return, Cyttorak makes his Juggernaut nearly invincible and unstoppable. It is unclear why Cyttorak would choose Justin as a host, as Justin is a true hero with a compassionate heart, but it is obvious that the Elder God has ulterior motives. Cyttorak always has a purpose for his hosts, and Justin’s is a major mystery…

It is amazing that Marvel has honored the long history of Juggernaut by making him a legacy character, with Justin Jin stepping in as the new Kid Juggernaut. Justin will star in his own origin story, as well as Marvel’s Voices: Avengers Academy, learning how to handle and accept his new powers and responsibility while upholding the values his family has instilled in him.
