Jane’s origin was much like the backstories of the other Wolverines, but with small details that make her story especially dark (perhaps even darker than she knows).
Jane Howlett’s personal lore as Wolverine continues to grow in Marvel Comics, something Wolverine fans should be excited about!

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Weapon X-Men #3! As it currently stands in Marvel Comics canon, it’s safe to say that Wolverine is having a pretty rough go of it, especially when considering how much trouble the multiverse is giving him lately. The prime Wolverine of Earth-616 is in the middle of a war with Sabretooth and his multiversal variants during the ongoing Sabretooth War. Meanwhile, five of Logan’s variants are skipping across realities searching for a rogue Onslaught, including a new version of Wolverine named Jane Howlett. And now, this new female Wolverine finally reveals her origin – and it’s blood-soaked.

In Weapon X-Men #3 by Christos Gage and Yildiray Çinar, the five Wolverines chosen from across the multiverse by an alternate version of the Phoenix-possessed Jean Grey are waiting for yet another deployment to a strange new world during their ongoing hunt for Onslaught. These Wolverines include Age of Apocalypse’s Weapon X, Old Man Logan’s Logan, Earth-X’s Wolverine, Marvel Zombies’ infected Wolverine, and the aforementioned Jane Howlett. As they wait, Jane tells the others her origin.

Jane reveals that she was born into a wealthy family in the late 1800s. Her family’s property had a groundskeeper named Thomas, who had a son nicknamed ‘Dog’. Jane and Dog were good friends as kids, but fearing that they’d develop romantic feelings, Jane’s family cut off their friendship. Years later, when Jane and Dog were adults, Dog and his father tried to force themselves on Jane. During the assault, Jane’s family ended up dead. In her rage, Jane developed her mutation, popped her claws for the first time, killed Thomas, and framed Dog for the murder.

Deadpool and Wolverine are taking off on an all-new team-up crossover in Marvel Comics (before the MCU), and it’s beginning with a hilarious insult.

Jane Howlett’s Origin Might Be Darker than Even She Knows (& the Original Wolverine Proves It)

Aside from knowing a woman named Rose (who played a pivotal role in James Howlett’s origin), Jane’s backstory aligns almost exactly with that of her multiversal counterparts, which means her origin might be even darker than she knows.

Everything Jane experienced was shared by the other Wolverines, with the only differences being the motivations behind those involved. The reason Thomas Logan and Dog attacked James’ family was that James was Thomas’ illegitimate son after he and James’ mother had an affair, and he broke into the Howlett’s estate to ‘take his family back’. That could mean that Thomas was Jane’s real father as well, which would also mean that Dog was her brother.

That would explain why the Howlett’s didn’t want them to be romantically involved (aside from fearing Jane would marry below her status), and would also make the fact that she framed him for murder all the more heart-wrenching. Not only that, but if Jane’s backstory is like James’, then that means she killed her own father when she murdered Thomas – and she doesn’t even know it.

Jane Howlett’s Loving Upbringing Makes Her Loss More Tragic than the Other Wolverines

When Thomas Logan and Dog broke into the Howlett estate and ruined James’ life, he was sent away by his mother, who had treated him with nothing but disdain his entire life. James came to resent his mother, and even decided to distance himself from the Howletts entirely by fully committing to his identity as a ‘Logan’. James was not raised with love, therefore losing his family was one of his lesser losses. Jane, however, was deeply loved by her mother and father, and she loved them just as much in return – and they were murdered right before her eyes.

James doesn’t miss the family that constantly treated him like dirt, while Jane’s traumatic loss haunts her every day.

Jane Howlett’s loving, supportive, and affectionate family was murdered before her eyes only moments before she became a murderer herself upon the development of her mutation, and the man she murdered may very well have been her birth father. In other words, the new female Wolverine’s origin is rough, to say the least, and absolutely blood-soaked.

Weapon X-Men #3 by Marvel Comics is available now.

Wolverine

The human mutant Wolverine (a.k.a. Logan) was born James Howlett, blessed with a superhuman healing factor, senses, and physiology. Subjecting himself to experimentation to augment his skeleton and claws with adamantium, Logan is as deadly as he is reckless, impulsive, and short-tempered. Making him the X-Men’s wildest and deadliest member, and one of Marvel Comics’ biggest stars.
