Marvel’s Latest Trip into the Spider-Verse Brings Back a Superhero

Edge of the Spider-Verse just brought back a fan-favorite hero. It also introduced multiple members of their personal rogues’ gallery.

“Birds of a Feather” from Edge of Spider-Verse #3 finds Cooper Cohen returning to his apartment in the early hours of the morning, just in time to catch his roommate Peter Parker getting the day started. Rather than being out all night partying as Peter is wont to believe, however, Cooper spent the previous evening facing off against the likes of Vulturion and the Rhino as Earth-71490’s astonishing Web-Weaver.

Introduced in the pages of 2022’s Edge of Spider-Verse #5 in the story “Counterfeit Catwalk” by writer Steve Foxe and artist Kei Zama, Cooper Cohen gained his powers when he saved his world’s Peter Parker from being bitten by a radioactive spider. When Cooper was bitten instead, it was only a matter of time before his powers emerged, giving him the opportunity to save his loved ones, his city, and even the entire Multiverse as the Web-Weaver.

Cooper played a key role in Marvel Comics’ “End of the Spider-Verse” event which kicked off in 2022’s Spider-Man #1 by writer Dan Slott and artist Mark Bagley. The event revolved around the ancient Shathra and her attempts to take control of or lay waste to, the Web of Life and Destiny. In an effort to save all realities, the Spider-Army was reformed to combat the threat of Shathra and her insectile army. Along the way, numerous heroes were transformed into wasp-like monstrosities, whereas others were removed from history itself entirely.

In proper Edge of Spider-Verse fashion, the latest issue in the current volume introduces an entirely new character in the form of Persephone Parker, aka Star-Spider. Hailing from the futuristic reality of Earth-1978, Persephone grew up in a world where the Earth had suffered numerous invasion attempts orchestrated by the Kree. More than two hundred years after the Avengers saved the world from its would-be oppressors, Persephone fought back against yet another attack by the Kree. As Star-Spider, Persephone wields an army of seemingly sentient, near-microscopic S.P.I.D.E.R. robots which both form her suit and afford her the powers she commands.
