In the year 2099, there is a new Star-Lord in town to rule over Planet Wakanda. The year 2099 has become synonymous with the Marvel brand ever since being introduced in four comic series in 1992 that were set on Earth-928 in Marvel’s multiverse. The year became especially popular thanks to how readers gravitated toward Miguel O’Hara, the Spider-Man of 2099.

Now, it looks like Marvel has plans to take 2099 where it’s never gone before, and that means introducing a Wakandan Star-Lord of the future. The new Star-Lord is featured on Nick Bradshaw’s cover art for Annihilation 2099 #2 by Steve Orlando and Jose Luis. Annihilation 2099 #2 will be released digitally and in stores on July 10.

Below, readers can find cover art for all five upcoming issues in the Annihilation 2099 event, which gives a futuristic overhaul to Marvel’s classic 2006 Annilation storyline. The first issue of Annihilation 2099 hits stands on July 3, and each issue will be released weekly from then on. Still, there’s plenty of mystery revolving around the new Star-Lord.

Who is Star-Lord 2099?

What We Know So Far

While readers likely won’t get a full understanding of who this new Star-Lord is until Annihilation 2099 #2 officially drops, the solicit summary gives readers enough of an idea of what to expect regarding the character, along with what can be found on the cover art above. The summary cites Star-Lord as a “Wakandan tech goddess!” She’s a one-woman Guardian of the Galaxy from the looks of it, but maybe she doesn’t need teammates judging from what’s in her hand. The cover showcases the Wakanda native fighting off Quasar with electricity surging through her body while wielding a hammer that may or may not be Mjolnir, Thor’s mighty weapon of choice.

More than just a weapon, the artifact is also a symbol of honor and nobility, showing her character is worthy enough to earn the right to hold this hammer. Some have speculated the original Star-Lord, Peter Quill, would be worthy enough to lift Mjolnir. But if this is indeed Mjolnir on the cover of Annihilation 2099 #2, then that means Peter’s successor is confirmed to be able to do so. Even more interesting is a brief allusion to her origin story, suggesting that she is “born to a fallen star.” She may be adopting the Star-Lord name not because she has any connection to Quill, but because she’s literally a lord from the stars.

The Evolution of Wakanda

The Country Expands into Space

What’s most fascinating about this new Star-Lord is that her presence deepens the lore of the Black Panthers’ world as much as it does the Guardians of the Galaxy. Wakanda has expanded beyond Earth to become an intergalactic empire, and it appears that this is true to a degree in the 2099 continuity. Whether this Planet Wakanda is related to the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda in the Earth-616 continuity remains to be seen. It could be that the Wakandans of Earth became so frustrated by suffering and interference by colonizers that they refuse to be a part of the same planet anymore. Before officially debuting, Star-Lord is already changing multiple sides of Marvel history forever.
