Avengers: Twilight shows readers what superhero retirement looks like in the Marvel Universe.

Avengers: Twilight #1 opens with Steve Rogers starting his day the best he can despite the various chronic pains that have crept up on him in his old age. After heading out into the streets of a brightly colored, futuristic New York City, Steve meets up with his old friends Luke Cage and Matt Murdock to reminisce on old times and discuss the current state of their country. As it turns out, the United States has seen a drastic reduction in both its costumed heroes and public action, all thanks to a piece of legislation known as the Watcher Act. Worse still, Steve’s best shot at turning things around has already come and gone both on the battlefield and in the Senate, and he doesn’t see any other way to fight back.

Announced in October 2023 at New York City Comic Con, Avengers: Twilight is a new take on Captain America’s classic Man Out of Time story. Rather than being literally frozen in place, the new seriesshowcases how Steve has become figuratively stuck as the world around him moves on in ways that prove just how far removed from the general zeitgeist he has become.

Zdarsky previously opened up about the role Steve Rogers has to play in Avengers: Twilight, explaining that “Steve is the perfect character with which to see a changed future since he’s been through that experience before coming out of WW2. His ethics and morals and outlook have a consistency to them, so seeing how he reacts to a changed America is always interesting, to me at least! And this future America is seemingly perfect, so Steve has to question whether or not to upset what his fellow Americans are comfortable with in pursuit of the truth.”
