Marvel fans with Vision Pro headsets, this one’s for you.

The superhero studio is launching a bespoke mixed-reality interactive experience for the Apple Vision Pro called “What If…? An Immersive Story” that pulls on different threads in the Marvel universe. It’s inspired by the Disney+ Marvel show and comics titled What If, both of which explore different alternate versions of Marvel lore.

“The animated series as well as the comic book has always been about looking over the horizon into realities that have yet to be conceived,” Executive Producer Brad Winderbaum says in a statement.

The upcoming Vision Pro experience will be an hour long and let viewers become players with decision-making power. Expect to see reimagined versions of Marvel characters, learn magic, and capture the infinity stones to uncover the powers they hold. Disney EVP and CTO Jamie Voris calls it “a deeply emotional and compelling story.”

The experience will only be available on the Vision Pro (sorry, Meta Quest users). Marvel crafted the visual storytelling experience with the help of ILM Immersive, which is also owned by Marvel parent company Disney.

Since its launch, the Vision Pro’s $3,500 price tag and inability to run iPhone, Mac, or iPad apps have been among its biggest pain points for users and developers. Not everyone in Hollywood and entertainment has jumped on board to engineer custom apps and experiences, like Netflix and YouTube, which still haven’t yet made Vision Pro apps. Others, like Disney and Warner Bros.’ Max, have taken the time to ship dedicated apps.

But does this new Marvel story mean more exclusive superhero content for the Vision Pro could be on horizon? “This project was a technological journey into mystery for an entirely new form of Marvel storytelling,” Marvel Studios director and executive producer Dave Bushore shares in an interview for the studio’s blog. “One I think we’ve only just scratched the surface of.”

The superhero studio is releasing an interactive story based on its ‘What If…?’ animated series that lets you take hold of the infinity stones and explore the Marvel universe.  Read More
