The following contains major spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #48, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Two of Spider-Man’s worst enemies have just had their true origins revealed. Unfortunately, it only makes their stories even more heartbreaking than they already were.

Amazing Spider-Man #48 opens to find Ben Reilly and Janine Godbe, better known as Chasm and Hallow’s Eve respectively, seated for an impromptu therapy session with one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest psychologists. Or rather, with a version of that same figure who is far less altruistic than usual. By the time Spider-Man and Betty Brant catch up with the villains, it is clear that the Queen Goblin is intent on recreating some of her worst crimes, specifically those that led to Roderick Kingsley and Ned Leeds’ transformations into the Hobgoblin.

The original Doctor Ashley Kafka made her Marvel Comics debut in the pages of 1991’s Spectacular Spider-Man #178 by writer J.M. DeMatteis and artist Sal Buscema. Throughout her career, Kafka established herself as one of the greatest minds in her field of superhuman psychology. Over the years that followed, she would work with a variety of classic costumed criminals, including Electro, the Vulture, and even the host to the Carnage symbiote himself – Cletus Kasady.

Though Kafka tragically lost her life at the hands of the serial killer known as Massacre, multiple clones of her were created by Miles Warren, aka the Jackal. Eventually, one of these clones usurped the original Kafka’s place, finding a home for herself within Ravencroft as a leading member of the institute’s staff all while believing herself to be the original. After being corrupted by the Sin-Eater and imbued with Norman Osborn’s former evil, Kafka became the villainous Queen Goblin.

The most recent revelation regarding Kafka’s place in the Marvel Universe rewrites the origins of both Kingsley and Leeds as the Hobgoblin. Kingsley was previously a fashion designer who turned to crime as the Hobgoblin using Norman Osborn’s old Green Goblin suit and a reconstructed glider. Eventually, Kingsley subjected Leeds to brainwashing in a bid to convince the latter that he was the Hobgoblin, setting Peter Parker’s old friend on a deadly path that ultimately led to his untimely albeit impermanent demise.

Spider-Man

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics’ most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man’s most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character’s lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O’Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.

Spider-Man is also the basis of several live-action film franchises and numerous animated television series. He is one of the most recognizable characters in the world. While he’s changed a lot over the decades, Steve Ditko and Stan Lee gave the world an unforgettable hero when they created Spider-Man.
