Long-range box office tracking for Madame Web suggests that audiences are just not interested in Sony’s latest non-Spider-Man-starring Marvel movie.

According to Boxoffice Pro, the upcoming superhero team-up movie is currently tracking to earn between $25 million and $35 million in its opening weekend at the box office. If Madame Web does end up launching somewhere in that range, it would mark the lowest opening weekend yet for the SSU franchise. Morbius currently has the worst SSU opening weekend at $39 million, followed by Venom ($80.3 million) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($90.1 million). Even if Madame Web comes in on the higher end of its tracking, its opening would still be lower than The Marvels, another female-fronted superhero team-up movie, that opened in November 2023 with $46.1 million.

What If…? Season 3 First Images Reveal Sam Wilson’s Animated Debut

Marvel Studios releases a first look at What If…? Season 3, featuring the long-awaited animated debut of Sam Wilson/Captain America.

Madame Web follows Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson), “a New York City paramedic who starts to show signs of clairvoyance. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she must protect three young women from a mysterious adversary who wants them dead,” reads the official synopsis. Although part of the SSU, director S. J. Clarkson recently revealed that Madame Web will be set “in a standalone world,” which allowed her to have “free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else.” Clarkson also shared that Madame Web is set in the year 2003, a whole fifteen years before the events of Venom.

Madame Web Reportedly Scrapped a Spider-Man Cameo

Clarkson’s comments seemingly indicate that Madame Web will not mention or reference any of the other SSU entries; however, that was reportedly not always the case. According to insider Jeff Sneider, Sony originally planned for Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man to make an appearance in Madame Web, which was later scrapped in favor of Tom Holland’s Wall-Crawler swinging in for a cameo. However, during reshoots, Madame Web removed all references to either version, with Clarkson confirming that the movie stands on its own.

Madame Web Is the Longest SSU Movie Yet

The runtime for Madame Web was recently reported to be 1 hour and 56 minutes (or 116 mins). While not as long as recent Marvel Cinematic Universe movies — which are often between 120 and 150 minutes — Madame Web will break the record for the longest installment yet in the SSU. The record was previously held by 2018’s Venom (112 mins), followed by 2022’s Morbius (104 mins) and 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage (97 mins). However, with two more SSU movies to come in 2024, it’s possible that the record won’t last for long as Kraven the Hunter or Venom 3 could easily end up being longer.

Madame Web opens in theaters on Feb. 14, 2024.
