Venom Just Confirmed His New Role in Marvel’s Universe With One Incredible Line

Venom has had an amazing, 36-year character arc, one that has seen him become one of Marvel’s biggest icons, and with one line, he cements this.

While readers will have to wait for the climactic battle of the
War
to know which Brock will be left standing, and what will be left of them, speculation can begin now, with fans taking sides just as Marvel’s various symbiote characters will have to do during the event.

Two Generations Of Marvel Heroes Clash In The Venom War

Only One Can Be Venom

As Marvel’s advanced solicitation for the Venom War notes, it is set to be the latest – and seemingly the most intense – in the series of symbiote-centric crossovers the publisher has produced in the past few years:

Maximum Carnage. Absolute Carnage. King in Black. Every few years, the wild symbiote corner of the Marvel Universe erupts in a saga oozing with violence, drama, and insanity that only Venom and his kind can deliver. This August, the next milestone symbiote event arrives in Al Ewing and Iban Coello’s VENOM WAR.

A master at planning out epic storylines, Ewing has been laying the foundation for VENOM WAR since the very beginning of his current run of Venom. Limitless in scope, the series has followed Eddie Brock and his son, Dylan, on separate journeys as the symbiote heroes. But after both have terrifying glimpses of the future, they realize only one of them can be Venom. Their father and son feud will become everyone’s problem as past and present symbiote characters alike are forced to take a side!

While readers will have to wait for the climactic battle of the War to know which Brock will be left standing, and what will be left of them, speculation can begin now, with fans taking sides just as Marvel’s various symbiote characters will have to do during the event.

Eddie Brock has been Venom for decades at this point, growing from Spider-Man’s greatest antagonist, into an anti-hero, and then a hero, weaving his own complicated legacy as a fan-favorite character. While Eddie hasn’t been the best father to his son Dylan, he’s always tried to make the world better for Dylan and there’s no doubt that he’s still motivated by those fatherly feelings of love, even as they drive him to defeat Dylan for his own good, and claim the mantle of the one, true Venom once more.

Dylan Brock Might Be The Venom The World Needs

But He Has To Defeat His Father First

Only one thing is clear, after the
Venom War
event, everything will change for Venom, whoever that ends up being.

Dylan Brock hasn’t been Venom for long, but he has proven to be more than adept in the role, even going up against the symbiote’s most dangerous perennial ally, its offspring, Carnage. Now, plagued by visions of a dark future, Dylan doesn’t believe his father is the right choice to be Venom. It seems as though Dylan will attempt to assert himself as the rightful wearer of the symbiote; when his father does the same, it is going to lead into a massive war between the two, as described by event writer Al Ewing:

This is what we’ve been building to since the start of this wild and way-out symbiote odyssey – the fateful confrontation between father and son!” Ewing explained. “Where better to have it than inside the squared circle? And who better to bring this all-action epic to the page with than my old buddy Iban Coello? I’m tellin’ ya, goo believer — this is vehemently varied Venom violence like never viewed, and only one host can wear the symbiote when the dust settles! Who’s it gonna be?

It appears Dylan Brock’s side of the Venom War will be Flash Thompson, Normie Osborn, and Black Widow, all typical good guys. On Eddie’s side is Meridius and the other versions of Eddie from different timelines. These characters, at least Meredius, are villainous, which brings into question Eddie’s reasoning for fighting this war. In addition to all of this, it seems that Doctor Doom is also masterminding the Venom War, and will have a hand in whatever fate Eddie Brock suffers. Only one thing is clear, after the Venom War event, everything will change for Venom, whoever that ends up being.
