Right now, Hollywood often boils down to two camps: pro-superhero blockbuster (led by Kevin Feige and the Marvel Cinematic universe), or against (led by Martin Scorsese). The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is coming out against: “I am confused at how the pinnacle of an actor’s career has ended up in that place,” he tells GQ U.K. White professes himself much more interested in the “$25 million drama that I think most actors want to make.”
But that doesn’t mean the superhero blockbuster machine isn’t interested in him. He reveals in the interview that he “had a meeting for a kind of Marvel-y movie.” That’s different from having a meeting for an actual Marvel movie; there are plenty of other franchises with money, but Marvel is the one that currently has the most cred (even despite the chaos behind the scenes). White went into this meeting with a presumably lesser franchise with “an attitude,” and said to the studio execs: “ ‘Tell me about why should I do your movie.’” This apparently did not go over well in the room. “They were like, ‘Fuck you,’ And I was like, ‘Right on.’”
White is willing to concede that Marvel gets “really good filmmakers to do those movies and obviously they get really good actors to do those movies.” He even admits that he “played it wrong” in the meeting, but also says he “played it the way I wanted to play it.”
Long story short, don’t expect to see White in a superhero movie any time soon, both because he doesn’t want to be in one and because they probably don’t want him now, either. Instead, he’ll be focused on being a television heartthrob and gaining his indie bonafides. The actor views the accolades he’s been racking up for The Bear as a way of “buying myself more time and being able to do what I really love to do.” Maybe when that time runs out, he’ll be willing to cash a Marvel check.
