Summary

Sean Gunn does not believe he is suited for his brother’s creative role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Sean Gunn has familiarity with the Guardians films, taking on a larger-scale role would be a significant change for him. Gunn’s absence may be less consequential if the MCU is preparing for a soft reboot and pivoting away from his associated character.

After starring in three movies within the franchise, James Gunn’s brother Sean addresses the possibility of taking over his creative role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following James’ departure for the DC Universe. Since he began his role as co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, fans have speculated about who could best fill his shoes. Though the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has come to a close, the characters themselves could very well come into play again, and it could be argued someone intimately familiar with them should be the one at the helm.

The announcement of James Gunn’s departure from the MCU came last spring, and since then the fate of his most closely-associated IPs has been in question. Sean Gunn has also worked on the Guardians films as an actor, being the motion capture performer for Rocket Raccoon and playing Ravager Kraglin, and in a recent interview with Screen Rant on the Saturn Awards red carpet, the talented sibling commented on the possibility of him assuming the role. Check out the full quote here:

Sean Gunn: I don’t really think I’m cut out for that job the way that my brother is. I do a little [of that], but I don’t think that’s quite the right job for me. You never know. Never say never.

It wouldn’t be out of the question for Sean Gunn to assume a more creative role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe releases, though it would be a bit outside his usual realm of work. While the actor has a storied filmography and has previously worked in behind-the-scenes roles on comedy shorts with his brothers, taking over James’ larger-scale role is another beast. His own talents combined with familiarity gained through watching his brother work on projects could very well give Sean a major leg-up in the process and make the transition easy.

From Groot to Rocket to Peter Quill, James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies have introduced some of the most beloved characters to the MCU.

However, Sean doesn’t have the emptiest schedule when it comes to upcoming projects, including once again being cast by James Gunn for the former Wonder Woman villain role of Maxwell Lord in his Superman: Legacy reboot. However, many fans have long speculated that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been gearing up for a soft reboot to reign in its many loose plotlines, pointing towards Avengers: Secret Wars as being said launchpoint. If that’s the case, a lack of Gunn’s participation could be less consequential considering his most-associated characters may soon be pivoted from, but only time will tell.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a multimedia superhero franchise that began in 2008 with Paramount’s Iron Man starring Robert Downey Jr. The franchise quickly grew in popularity, with Disney eventually buying out Marvel Entertainment in 2009. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
