Warning: Spoilers for Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #3!Captain Pakistan rounds out Ms. Marvel’s squadron of what is perhaps the most unique Avengers roster ever assembled. From the Champions to the X-Men to the actual Avengers, Ms. Marvel has been a part of several teams within the Marvel Universe but has yet to lead a team of her own. The closest she comes to leading her own team now is one conceived of heroes within her own mind.

Her Avengers assemble in Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #3 by Iman Vellani, Sabir Pirzada, Carlos Gomez, Adam Gorham, Erick Arciniega, VC’s Joe Caramagna, Tom Muller, and Jay Bowen. When Kamala’s mind is invaded by the anti-mutant hate group known as Orchis, there is only one team that she can rely on for help: the characters of fanfics past, including Captain Pakistan!

Only by drawing on the powers of her fanfiction creations does Kamala manage to avoid triggering a weapon that could destroy all mutants.

Ms. Marvel Assembles The Avengers of Her Mind

Orchis manages to implant a microscopic drone inside of Kamala’s skull. From there, Orchis attempts to use a Trojan Horse to convince Ms. Marvel’s subconscious to inadvertently activate a bomb that will wipe out all mutant psychics off the planet. When the villains’ plan backfires, the Trojan Horse tries to fight back, but to combat it, Ms. Marvel calls on the heroes she created in her childhood through fanfiction. They include Doctor Surfer (an amalgam of Silver Surfer and Doctor Strange readers met last issue), a hedgehog with Hulk hands, Wolverine with hot dog fingers, a sloth in a fur hat, a Galactus head with what appears to be Ant-Man’s body, a shuriken ninja, and Captain Pakistan.

Could Fanfic Avengers Tease What’s to Come?

It is often in Marvel scenarios like this, maybe for superhero comic books in general, where a dream is never just a dream. A dream often winds up manifesting as something greater in reality. For Ms. Marvel, the dream she just had may end up being something more than that in the future. Of course, that isn’t to say that any of Kamala’s products of fanfiction are going to come to fruition. Captain Pakistan is just the Pakistani equivalent to Captain America with the Pakistani flag draped across his body, while hedgehogs simply don’t have Hulk fists for hands.

What is more likely to happen is that Ms. Marvel is destined to finally take the next step in her superhero career: lead her own team. She may not lead the Avengers, but the X-Men is an option now. She could even return to her Champions to lead them. Alternatively, much like she does with the characters of fanfics past, Kamala could end up leading a team of her very own creation. It would make sense that as the Ms. Marvel character continues to grow and develop, so will her opportunities to become a true leader of her own team.
