Summary

Uncertainty surrounds the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite being part of the franchise, Sean Gunn admits to being in the dark about the team’s fate. Last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 seemed to close the door on the characters’ stories for the time being.

Guardians of the Galaxy alum Sean Gunn gives an uncertain update on the team’s status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After first being introduced in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the eponymous group went on to appear in five additional MCU movies, the most recent being 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which marked the end of an era for the characters. Gunn’s brother James, who directed all three Guardians movies, definitively stated Vol. 3 would be his last for the franchise, and has since shifted over to DC Studios.

At the Saturn Awards on Sunday night, Screen Rant had the opportunity to speak with Gunn, where he confessed he remains in the dark about the Guardians’ MCU future. While Gunn didn’t shoot down the entire possibility of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4, he said the following:

I honestly have no idea. There’s always things going on in the kitchen at Marvel, where they’re kind of figuring out the near future and the far future. But if I told you what they’re doing with the Guardians, I’d be lying.

20 Best Quotes From The MCU’s Guardians Of The Galaxy Trilogy

Known for their humorous family dynamic, the Guardians of the Galaxy have produced some of the MCU’s best quotes throughout their trilogy.

As Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 4. remains a mystery for now, Marvel Studios isn’t exactly in need of pursuing another movie with those characters just yet. Ever since The Multiverse Saga began, more of Marvel Studios’ creative flaws have begun to come through the cracks on top of dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. They have also had to tackle delays and production issues in light of the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes, as well as mixed reception to some of the recent MCU movies and TV shows.

Rushing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4 simply because of its critical and commercial success wouldn’t do that franchise any justice. Right now, Marvel has to focus on how they are going to execute the end of The Multiverse Saga, including what to do with Kang after the firing of Jonathan Majors. There are also a lot of other MCU movies that they have struggled to get into production, including the reboots for Fantastic Four, Blade, X-Men, and the next two Avengers movies.

Sean Gunn will next be seen in his brother’s DC Universe movie, Superman: Legacy, and voicing several roles in DC’s Creature Commandos.

While it is understandable that many want to see the Guardians of the Galaxy again, it is also not a bad idea to save the team’s return until after The Multiverse Saga. If Avengers: Secret Wars is meant to soft reboot the MCU, that can be a more organic transition point for the team as the MCU goes forward. Until they return, the entire Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy is available to stream on Disney+ and for purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.
