Highlights

Marvel has a reputation for being family-friendly, but it has released mature content over the years with some violent and gory imagery. Characters like Deadpool, Wolverine, The Punisher, Daredevil, and Carnage have been involved in some of Marvel’s most brutal and violent storylines. NetherRealm Studios would be a perfect fit for creating a Marvel fighting game that showcases these powerful and violent characters in all their glory.

In the current zeitgeist, Marvel has a reputation for being a much more family-friendly company than competitors like DC or Dark Horse. While this has definitely been true for the last few decades with most Marvel movies, TV shows, and video games aiming for a PG-13 rating for mass appeal, it doesn’t mean that Marvel has always been as squeaky clean as audiences have been led to believe, with the comic publisher having its fair share of mature content release over the years.

Just like DC, Marvel has had countless different writers, illustrators, and individual comic lines over the last 60+ years, and in that time it’s only natural that a few of those stories have ventured into more mature waters. Though they’re definitely a bit rarer nowadays, Marvel has had a ton of violent comics, movies, TV shows, and even games over the years, and in these rare instances, the most powerful characters are able to really let loose, which results in some pretty violent and gory imagery – imagery that would be right at home in a NetherRealm Studios fighting game.

Deadpool

One of the few characters that’s actually managed to largely avoid a PG-13 rating even in the modern age of Marvel, Deadpool would a natural pick for a NetherRealm Studios Marvel game. Capable and used to getting his limbs torn off, Deadpool can take hits like an absolute champ, but he can also dish it out in equal measure. With a penchant for gross-out humor, Deadpool isn’t afraid of getting dirty in a fight, which can lead to some pretty gory and brutal scenes that often involve at least a few severed body parts.

Wolverine

Possibly Marvel’s most brutal character, at least when he’s allowed to go all-out, Wolverine should be the top pick for any NetherRealm Studios Marvel game. With razor-sharp Adamantium claws, Wolverine can tear through flesh like it’s butter, and though that’s rarely seen in most Wolverine live-action or animated appearances, when it is shown off it’s pretty spectacular. All fans need to do is look to Logan, the X-Men Origins game, and likely the upcoming Deadpool 3 to see Wolverine when he’s allowed to take the gloves off.

The Punisher

Another Marvel character that isn’t often used unless he can be at least a bit R-rated, The Punisher would fit right at home with NetherRealm Studios’ trademark over-the-top violence. Though he doesn’t have any superpowers at all, at least in most storylines, The Punisher is capable of inflicting some serious harm upon his enemies, using an absurd arsenal of weapons to brutally torture and kill those he deems unworthy to stay alive.

Daredevil

One of the more “good” Marvel figures on this list, Daredevil isn’t afraid of getting his hands dirty when he needs to. While Daredevil’s affinity for martial arts often makes him a fine character for a PG-13 rating, his moveset can get a lot more brutal when he’s allowed to really flex his muscles. Netflix’s popular Daredevil live-action show did a good job of showing the character’s more savage side, often seeing him beat his targets to a pulp with little remorse. In a potential NetherRealm Marvel fighting game, Daredevil seems like an obvious pick.

Carnage

A Marvel character with practically no limits, Carnage is an even more aggressive and violent version of Venom, with its own bloodthirsty Symbiote choosing to bond with a serial killer. Carnage has committed some truly heinous acts in the comics, ranging from murdering an entire restaurant full of people to throwing a baby out of a window to distract Spider-Man. Though he probably wouldn’t get too bloody himself in a fight, Carnage is capable of inflicting some real damage upon others with the help of the Symbiote’s shape-shifting powers.
