ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is inching closer to being recognized as the official Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. The recent Phase 5 Disney+ series Echo confirmed that each of Marvel’s Netflix series is canon, leaving only the franchise’s network shows to be officially recognized in the same manner.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ran for seven seasons from 2013 to 2020, occasionally tying into various MCU movies. Just under the radar of the larger MCU, the show’s characters faced plenty of major threats over the years. In its celebrated run, the series introduced several villains whose terrible evil measures up to even the powerful villains of the larger MCU movies.

Ant-Man 3 Is Marvel’s Second MODOK, Agents of SHIELD Got There First

Before appearing in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, MODOK almost made a “Superior” live-action debut on Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD on ABC.

John Garrett was Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first primary villain. Portrayed by the late Bill Paxton, Garrett was one of many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents who were revealed to be Hydra spies late in the show’s first season. He and his protege Grant Ward specifically target Agent Phil Coulson’s team at the end of the season to wipe them out permanently.

Garrett perfectly manipulated the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s first season to grant himself more power. Taking advantage of the Deathlok program, he even turned himself into a superhuman that posed a massive threat to the team. However, while he served as a great villain for the show’s first season, he ultimately wasn’t as memorable or as enduring as certain other antagonists who would come later on.

The Doctor was an evil version of Dr. Leopold Fitz, a key member of Agent Coulson’s team. This version of Fitz hails from the Framework, an alternate reality program where the world is ruled by Madame Hydra. The Doctor serves as Madame Hydra’s right-hand man and lover, using his scientific genius to consolidate power.

The Doctor is callous, cold, and uncaring, committing all kinds of atrocities in the name of Hydra. Even worse, the villain returns after the Framework’s destruction, burrowing himself in the real-world Fitz’s mind and threatening to take over. The horrific and complex struggle between Fitz and his emerging villainous personality is part of what makes him one of the best characters in the series — and what makes Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. one of Marvel’s best shows

When Coulson’s crew ends up in a dystopian future in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 5, they are held captive in a Kree space station ruled by the evil Kasius. Enslaving the human race and wiping out any Inhuman opposition, Kasius keeps a stranglehold over the Lighthouse, his personal space station, until a revolution finally ends his reign of terror.

On the surface, Kasius is cold and emotionless, making him an eerie villain for the show’s heroes to face. However, as the season goes on, Kasius’s underlying vulnerabilities begin to show, most of which stem from the disapproval of his family. While this doesn’t go to make the monstrous character more sympathetic, Kasius’s more vulnerable nature makes him far more interesting than many other villains in the series.

9 Times Agents of SHIELD Was Ahead of the MCU

Agents Of SHIELD built a firm fanbase after adapting risky stories, concepts and characters before the Marvel Cinematic Universe did.

Kyl MacLachlan has a recurring role in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Calvin Zabo, a.k.a. Mister Hyde. Zabo is a mad scientist whose experiments have gotten him into trouble over the years. However, an extra wrinkle is thrown into his story when it is revealed that he is Skye’s long-lost father.

Zabo’s intense anger over losing his wife years ago makes him incredibly dangerous, especially when in his monstrous Mister Hyde form. His quirky scientist persona mixed with his powerful Hyde personality draws parallels to the dynamic between Bruce Banner and the Hulk. However, his intense love for his daughter helps to make Zabo far more interesting, as he struggles to do terrible things in the name of his family.

Angry over the torture she was forced to endure at the hands of human scientists, Jiaying plots to destroy humanity, beginning with S.H.I.E.L.D.

Using an army of powerful Inhumans, Jiaying keeps Coulson’s team on the run for much of the season. She proves herself to be a master manipulator in managing to make herself look like the victim when dealing with S.H.I.E.L.D., thereby justifying her way in the eyes of many of her followers. In the end, Jiaying likely would have won if not for the interference of Calvin Zabo.

The Most Popular Agents of SHIELD Ships, Ranked

From Fitzsimmons to Philinda, Agents of SHIELD featured many beloved potential and canonical relationships that have ignited fans’ imaginations.

General Glenn Talbot was a recurring character throughout the first five seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Over the years, he served as both a rival and an ally for Coulson’s team and, although they had their differences, the two leaders ultimately considered themselves to be friends. However, Talbot begins to slip into villainy after merging with the dangerous substance known as Gravitonium to become the superhuman Graviton.

Graviton is one of the most powerful villains that the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ever faced. Able to manipulate gravity itself, Talbot nearly destroyed the entire planet in a misguided attempt to save it. While he was still one of the show’s best villains, Graviton’s storyline ended rather abruptly, leaving Talbot to die a tragic death without much resolution to his other ongoing storylines.

However, it is later revealed that Malick is a leading member of Hydra whose family has been guiding the organization for years in the worship of the Inhuman god, Hive, upon whose visage the Hydra insignia is based.

Malick is the perfect counterpart to Phil Coulson. While the two agents have both found great success as leaders, Coulson values human lives far more than Malick, who is willing to sacrifice anyone to get what he wants. Unfortunately for him, Malick ends up being a mere pawn in Hive’s master plan, and his villainy is cut short.

Agents of SHIELD Did Secret Invasion’s Story 6 Years Ago (But Better)

Secret Invasion attempted to adapt Marvel Comics’ best paranoid thriller storyline but Agents of SHIELD already did a better job in its fourth season.

Hive was the original Inhuman, who was worshipped by the early founders of Hydra for centuries. He is finally brought back during the events of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s third season, where he possesses the body of Grant Ward and attempts to take over the entire world.

Hive not only helps flesh out the history of Hydra but also helps establish the Inhuman lore of the MCU. As terrifying as he was in Ward’s body, however, Hive only gets scarier when he finally unleashes his monstrous tentacled form in the season’s final episodes. In the end, Hive proved powerful enough that S.H.I.E.L.D. was forced to sacrifice one of its most powerful agents to take him off the board.

Mallory Jansen plays Aida, a Life Model Decoy who serves as the main antagonist in the fourth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Originally developed as a way to help S.H.I.E.L.D., Aida eventually comes in contact with the Darkhold, which corrupts her programming and leads her to devise a scheme to take over the world.

Aida is a wonderfully complex character who asserts herself as one of the show’s best villains. Aida and Loki‘s Miss Minutes both long to become real, thinking, and feeling people — and will do anything to achieve that goal. However, the best part of Aida’s arc is just how well the show’s writers dealt with the concept of artificial intelligence. The show’s fourth season is filled with fun explorations of this concept, including in hair-raising episodes like “Self-Control” and in the magnificent “Framework” arc in which Aida develops her own Matrix-like reality.

Originally a member of Phil Coulson’s team, Grant Ward’s Hydra loyalties are revealed late in Season 1 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. In the ensuing years, Ward is a consistent thorn in Coulson’s side, always turning up when it is least convenient to wreak as much havoc as possible.

Once a somewhat straight-laced and boring character, Ward rapidly develops into the show’s best villain after his reveal. Slowly corrupted by the villainous John Garrett, Ward is almost sympathetic–until he fully embraces his villainy and seeks to kill Coulson’s crew. What makes him such a great villain, however, is his connection to the other main characters in the series, who all had personal relationships with him before he turned. While he was never the show’s most powerful antagonist, Ward is the one who did the most damage to the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., forever making himself the best villain they ever faced.
