Summary
The series debuts in early September, showcasing new recruits Bronze, Axo, and Melee as the next generation of X-Men.
With themes of diversity and acceptance, Exceptional X-Men represents a fresh start after a battle with AI leaves the X-Men in shambles.
The X-Men have fought for the lives of mutantkind in the war against Orchis, and as one violent chapter comes to a close, another one must begin. Fortunately for up-and-coming mutants, they have two seasoned X-Men veterans to lead the way. Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde are stepping up to act as mentors and head up a new team, even if it means putting (some of) their differences aside.
Writer Eve L. Ewing and artist Carmen Canero have the honor of ushering in a new mutant line-up in the upcoming Exceptional X-Men series. Now, Marvel has released a new look at the series, which is set to debut in early September. Exceptional X-Men brings together seasoned teacher, Emma Frost, and one of the X-Men’s first and most famous students, Kitty Pryde.

MUTANTKIND’S TWO GREATEST TEACHERS MOLD THE NEXT GENERATION OF X-MEN! KATE PRYDE has returned home to Chicago following the war with ORCHIS. Having stepped away from the world of mutantdom, she is nevertheless called back into action as she crosses paths with a trio of new young mutants, BRONZE, AXO and MELEE, who clearly need training and guidance. Unfortunately for Kate, EMMA FROST thinks so as well!
The two are slated to guide Bronze, Axo, and Melee – three mutants heralding a fresh era of X-Men. It’s never been easy to be a mutant, but a post-Orchis world is more difficult than ever, and the new kids need all the help they can get.
New Mutants Mean the X-Men Will Continue Surviving
Emma Frost and Kitty Pryde Will Make an Effective Team
Since Charles Xavier founded the X-Men and recruited the original five members, there’s been a fresh burst of hope with each wave of students – no matter how small or expansive. Bronze, Axo, and Melee make up the newest incarnation, yet they’re following in the footsteps of predecessors like the Hellions, New Mutants, and New X-Men, who often had to overcome destruction and tension of their own just to survive. It won’t be easy, but they’ll be overcoming their differences alongside their teachers, who are slated to “have lessons to teach each other” too.
Luckily, the three new recruits couldn’t be in better hands. Emma Frost values teaching above all else, and she has proven she’ll be there for her students even at the worst of times, as she was through the Genoshan Massacre, M-Day, Utopia, and more. Whatever her plans for a post-Orchis world may be, that won’t change. Even Kitty Pryde, who has given up the X-life in favor of trying something “normal” in Chicago, is pulled back in for the sake of these new recruits. Nothing is more important than getting unseasoned mutants off on the right foot.
The Exceptional X-Men Are a Big Piece of the Mutant Puzzle
They Represent a Chance to Start Again
After an intense battle with AI, which leaves many of the X-Men’s previous structures (and people) in shambles, they’re left to start over again. The Exceptional X-Men, and the fresh faces the team brings along, prove that it’s possible. Axo, Melee, and Bronze are the future of mutantkind. That isn’t an easy spot to fill, and their introduction will doubtlessly bring conflict of its own. There is no easy way to join the X-Men, but with Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost leading the way, the new recruits have the best chance possible to succeed.
