Wolverine‘s chances of sticking around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Hugh Jackman’s return in Deadpool 3 get addressed by the movie’s director. Jackman and Ryan Reynolds lead Deadpool 3‘s cast, which includes actors from the past two Deadpool movies, newcomers to Marvel films, a surprising return from Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, and a long list of rumored actors from past Marvel movies. After returning in Deadpool 3, Jackman could stay in the MCU for a few more projects.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy spoke about Jackman’s possible MCU future after the film. According to Levy, he has no idea whether Jackman will continue as Wolverine after Deadpool 3‘s story is done, which is why he wanted to see the actor don Wolverine’s iconic yellow costume from the comics in Deadpool 3, saying, “I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen.” Check out the full quote below:
“Like the rest of the world, I’ve waited two decades to see Wolverine in a whole movie with Deadpool, and I don’t know if this is our last shot at Wolverine on screen, so I was going to make goddamned sure we get the old yellow and blue just once, and that we get it right.”
Jackman addressed his MCU future as Wolverine after Deadpool 3 last year, after his return to the role was announced. According to the actor, he imagines “every movie as a one-and-done,” saying that he likes to “just take it one at a time.” That way, even if there are plans for Jackman to come back as Wolverine in the MCU after Deadpool 3, fans will have to wait until after the movie releases to get news about them.
Based on the character’s popularity, it is a given that Wolverine will play a role in the MCU for years to come, and while a new actor will inevitably take on the role when Marvel Studios debuts its own take on the X-Men, Jackman could still stick around the MCU a little longer after Deadpool 3 and play a role in multiple movies. The MCU is currently undergoing its Multiverse Saga, which has brought back not only Jackman but Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as other stars from past Marvel movies.
All of those returns will culminate in Avengers: Secret Wars, the Multiverse Saga’s finale. To match the scale of the story from the comics that the movie is based on, Avengers: Secret Wars should feature past and present MCU heroes fighting together with characters from all over Marvel’s live-action history to save the multiverse. That way, Jackman’s Wolverine can have a major send-off a few years after his Deadpool 3 return, preparing the MCU for a new Wolverine when the X-Men are rebooted.
