Summary

The Multiverse Saga is more fleshed out than the Infinity Saga’s concept of time travel, which hasn’t been well fleshed out. Marvel has learned from its mistakes with time travel and is now dedicated to thoroughly explaining the concept of the multiverse. With upcoming projects in the Multiverse Saga, any lingering questions about the multiverse are likely to be answered, ensuring fewer inconsistencies than with time travel.

The Multiverse Saga may have just begun, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has proven that this new era will beat the Infinity Saga in a crucial way. The Multiverse Saga obviously focuses on the concept of the Marvel multiverse and its many timelines and variants, and the MCU has been heavily exploring the concept since the Infinity Saga wrapped up with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. It is one of the most complex concepts introduced in the MCU so far, yet it has already been more properly fleshed out than most others.

The Infinity Saga’s equivalent to the multiverse was the concept of time travel in the MCU, another idea with many possibilities and interpretations. Though technically introduced in Ant-Man with the Quantum Realm, Tony Stark seemingly figures out time travel in Avengers: Endgame. There wasn’t any explicit explanation of the rules of time travel up until that point, which raised a multitude of questions about the concept. However, the MCU is thoroughly exploring the concept of the multiverse, showing how the franchise has learned from its mistakes.

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has only just begun, but the concept of the multiverse is already way more fleshed out than time travel will ever be. When it comes to abstract ideas like these, a lot of explicit set-up is required to have it fully resonate with the audience. Time travel is notoriously tricky for any form of media to nail, and the MCU really only brought it up once in Endgame. Though the film’s characters do explain how it works, it’s such a brief moment from the audience’s perspective that it leaves viewers with more questions than answers.

Each release in the Multiverse Saga has introduced some new information about the multiverse, building on the lore. With many projects still to be released before Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, any questions about the multiverse are sure to be answered by then. Spending time to build up the concept ensures that there won’t be as many inconsistencies as there were with time travel.

The studio is seemingly learning from its mistakes as the multiverse has been the MCU’s sole focus as of late. A big advantage the Multiverse Saga has over the Infinity Saga is the addition of Disney+ shows in Phase 4, meaning there are more avenues for the MCU to explore topics they can’t cover in the main films. Loki is instrumental in introducing key multiverse concepts, and the fact that Marvel even dedicated a whole project to explaining the multiverse shows that they now know how crucial it is to explicitly flesh out such important concepts.

With time travel only really being explicitly explained in Avengers: Endgame, the MCU’s concept of time travel is still vague to this day. There are many questions with plot holes due to the lack of build-up that the MCU likely won’t get a chance to answer. However, Marvel has shown that they learned from their Infinity Saga mistake as they are currently doing a thorough job of explaining the multiverse. With so many projects still to be released before The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars, the MCU’s multiverse will surely be fleshed out by then in a way time travel never was.
