Early reactions for the final Marvel Cinematic Universe movie of 2023 are finally here as critics are sharing their thoughts on The Marvels. After the first Captain Marvel movie became a smashing success for Marvel Studios, the sequel is finally arriving this week, bringing Carol Danvers, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau/Photon together. With Kamala and Monica’s roles being set up through Ms. Marvel and WandaVision respectively, The Marvels will combine their arcs with Carol’s journey.

After a number of delays, The Marvels is arriving in theaters this Friday. As with most Marvel movies, critics and select members of the media have gotten to preview the film in advance and are now finally sharing their initial thoughts on the Captain Marvel sequel. Check out a sampling of comments below:

Screen Rant‘sMolly Freeman called The Marvels “an absolute BLAST,” as she commended director Nia DaCosta’s work with the latest MCU installment while also praising Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani’s performances.

Fandango‘s Erik Davis praised DaCosta’s The Marvels as being “a great time at the movies,” while celebrating its good pacing, and brings up Vellani as stealing the show with her “wide-eyed “Holy Cow!” humor to the story.”

The Hollywood Handle referred to The Marvels as “a lovely, surprising, decent, and delightful experience,” and also referred to the final act as having some great “emotional beats.”

Film critic William Bibbiani went on to say that The Marvels is “one of the better times I’ve had in a theater with a Marvel movie in the last couple of years,” and describes the dynamic with the characters as a “wonderful ensemble.”

Buzzfeed‘s Nora Dominick admitted that as someone who “adore[s] Captain Marvel and WandaVision,” The Marvels was something she was ready to have fun with, and she praised the three female stars for their “superb comedic timing together, but also beautifully worked in the touching scenes.”

TVInsider‘s Kelli Boyle described The Marvels as “the next great addition to the MCU“that is “full of personality,” while also enjoying the fight choreography and also how Marvel Studios “finally let Samuel L. Jackson just be funny.”

Fandom‘s Eric Goldman brought up how The Marvels, following “the big low of [Ant-Man and The Wasp:] Quantumania and the high of GotG 3,” is “a solid middle of the path.”

The Mary Sue‘s Rachel Leishman spoke about how The Marvels is not only “so much fun,” but also how it is “action-packed goodness,” as she loved the female trinity’s dynamic on screen.

Film Poser‘s Josie Meléndez labeled The Marvels “the most fun I’ve had in theaters all year,” as she went on to praise Vellani’s presence with her co-stars.

Screen Rant‘s Joseph Deckelmeier stated that “all I wanted from The Marvels was to have a good time and that movie is stupid fun!” He also added that Kamala, Monica, and Carol’s presence in the movie is a big enjoyment.

Screen Rant‘s Cooper Hood also shared how The Marvels is “big, a bit silly, and a lot of fun,” particularly due to the power swapping that helped add for “unique action scenes” while also teasing “lots of MCU connections and teases for the future.”

While the rest of the world will be able to judge The Marvels for themselves soon, the early positive reactions are definitely a big win for the MCU. Over the last few weeks, The Marvels has reportedly been targeting a low box office weekend that is 72% lower than Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. However, with The Marvels already starting to gather buzz, word of mouth could easily help the film’s box office results in the coming weeks.

If The Marvels does become a commercial success for Marvel Studios, it will ideally mean that more female-led superhero movies in the MCU will be greenlit. Even though Black Widow was a mixed bag, Captain Marvel became the first female superhero movie to cross over $1 billion dollars, which is why a sequel was a no-brainer. If The Marvels is at least a solid financial win for Marvel Studios, a third sequel is more than likely and could encourage Kevin Feige to give other heroines their own solo projects.

With Carol, Kamala, and Monica’s relationship seemingly being one of the standouts in The Marvels, it will be exciting to see where they go together in the future, whether it be in a sequel or the upcoming Avengers movies in Phase 6. It will also be interesting to see if The Marvels sets up the potential Ms. Marvel season 2 that is supposedly dependent on this film’s success. For now, the world will be able to catch The Marvels starting this Friday.
