Warning! Spoilers ahead for Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1!

Venom antagonist and all-time deadly Marvel villain Knull, the King in Black, just teased a surprise return in the pages of the latest extra-length Spider-Man one-shot. The issue brings the alternate dimension character known as Kid Venom into the mainstream Marvel Universe, but his arrival is an ominous portent, as it appears he has been drawn there by Knull, who seeks to make a comeback in a big, bad way.

Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1 contains the story “Prelude to the New Dimension,” written by Mitsuyasa Sakai, with art by Gerardo Sandoval, starts with the Multiversal Spider-Society trying to help Kid Venom get back to his home timeline, but ultimately ends with the character being pulled through a portal to Earth-616, the main Marvel reality.

The story ends with the promise that the cliffhanger will be resolved in Kid Venom Team-Up, though fans will have to wait until next year to get their hands on the issue. What that means for Knull in the meantime remains unclear at this time.

Knull Returns And Kid Venom Joins The Mainstream Marvel Universe, Setting Up Major Future Storylines

Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1 contains several stories with Multiversal implications; the “Prelude to the New Dimension” closes out the issue, and despite being just a few brief pages, mostly consisting of dialogue, its potential implications for the future of the Marvel Universe are no less significant. As much as that is because of Kid Venom being imported to the mainstream Marvel continuity, there is also the matter of the end of the story, as a mysterious voice in Kid Venom’s head calls to him, saying: “Knull calls for you, my child. Now enter the portal…and come find me.”

Tying Knull’s return to Kid Venom’s emergence in Earth-616 is a smart choice, and given that the next step in this story isn’t coming until 2026, Marvel is clearly setting up a long-term plan for both characters.

Knull hasn’t appeared since being killed off in 2021’s King in Black series, but for a character so powerful, and a villain so popular, his re-emergence in Marvel lore was inevitable. Still, with the paradigm of the Venom franchise having been dramatically altered over the past year, it’s been uncertain how exactly the return of Knull might fit into that bigger picture. Tying Knull’s return to Kid Venom’s emergence in Earth-616 is a smart choice, and given that the next step in this story isn’t coming until 2026, Marvel is clearly setting up a long-term plan for both characters.

Kid Venom And Knull Are Going To Be Major Players In The Venom Franchise’s Future

The Villain And Fledgling Hero Are Tied Together Now

In just a select few appearances, Kid Venom has quickly established himself as a fan-favorite new Marvel character. The character stands out, in part, because of his origins in 10th-century Japan, something that is at the crux of “Prelude to the New Dimension,” as during his brief encounter with the Spider-Society, the Spider-heroes try to explain that more than just being transported to another dimension, Kid Venom has also been vaulted more than a thousand years in the future. In other words, Marvel has made it clear that the character’s future is in the mainstream Marvel Universe.
