With the Sentry this close to debuting in Thunderbolts*, the character’s creator isn’t holding back in his criticism of Marvel Entertainment. Fans everywhere are eagerly awaiting to see the fan-favorite character finally gracing the silver screen, but Rick Veitch has a lot to say about being cut out from the Sentry’s creation.

Rick Veitch spoke with Popverse to discuss his involvement with the Sentry, taking readers on a journey to show how the Marvel hero came to be. After discussing how he and Paul Jenkins came up with the pitch, Veitch reveals that Jenkins took the pitch to Marvel, but the publisher wanted Jenkins to work on the project with artist Jae Lee, whom Jenkins previously worked with on Inhumans.

Veitch was not credited for his part in the Sentry’s creation, and he has claimed Marvel doesn’t recognize his contribution, going so far as to call Marvel “the House of Stolen Ideas.

Rick Veitch Discusses Being Cut Out of the Sentry’s Creation

Sentry’s Co-Creator Doesn’t Hold Back on Marvel Criticism

Many heroes enter the Marvel Universe with a splash, but the Sentry literally changed comic book history. The character was envisioned as a hero who had been around for decades, but who had been completely forgotten by everyone, including the hero himself. The Sentry debuted in a self-titled miniseries under the Marvel Knights banner before later teaming up with heroes such as the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man. But the Sentry really rose to prominence when he became a member of the New Avengers roster, before later playing a role in Dark Avengers and later, the Siege event.

Veitch’s frustration is understandable. While Jenkins somewhat acknowledged Veitch’s contributions to the Sentry’s creation, Marvel has stonewalled Veitch altogether. Veitch, unfortunately, isn’t the first comic book creator who has had their part in the creation of a character minimized or even cut out altogether. It’s especially rough now that the Sentry is making his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel Studios isn’t using this as an opportunity to finally give Veitch his long-overdue credit. While fans are excited to see the Sentry debut in the MCU, it’s important to remember who helped bring the character to life.

The Sentry’s Background Isn’t as Neat as It Seems

Rick Veitch Deserves to Be Heard Out

To be fair, crediting people when it comes to comic book creations can be messy sometimes. But Veitch at least deserves to air his criticisms. He’s been fighting for proper credit for decades and even Jenkins has admitted that Veitch played some role in Sentry’s creation (though fans may never really know how much of one he did or didn’t play). Regardless, given the history of comic creators who never got the proper credit for the characters and concepts they helped imagine, it’s important that people listen to what they have to say.

It’s unfortunate that drama like this has to be so complicated. But when a movie like Thunderbolts* comes out, and it includes a character with a history like the Sentry’s, it’s inevitable that this conversation comes back into focus. But just as MCU fans are in their right to watch the Sentry make his debut in Thunderbolts*, Rick Veitch is in his right to continue airing his grievances.
