The first issue of Marvel Knights: The World to Come arrived on comic book store shelves on June 4. The issue gave fans a glimpse into one of the most harrowing futures that the Marvel Universe has ever seen. Marvel Knights: The World to Come #1 charted several major events leading up to T’Challa’s twilight years, including his mother’s efforts to help him find love in the wake of Storm’s death and the Black Panther’s eventual marriage to Monica Lynne, a New York jazz singer who T’challa had an on-again-off-again relationship with before being wed.
Perhaps the biggest development in Marvel Knights: The World to Come #1 was the introduction of Ketema, T’Challa and Monica’s son. Rather than making his debut as a child or even as a hero, Ketema first appears as T’Challa’s opponent in a battle for the right to rule Wakanda as its king. While T’Challa does everything he can to convince Ketema that the priests of Wakanda have been leading the young royal astray, the Black Panther’s son is so fully consumed by rage and hatred that there is nothing the hero can do to stop him from letting loose and usurping his throne.

Before the release of Marvel Knights: The World to Come, CBR spoke to Joe Quesada about the groundbreaking series. Regarding the design of Ketema himself, Quesada explained that, “For The World To Come, I had a lot of wonderful inspiration. Ketema, whom you will meet in the first issue, is wearing a costume that is a modernized spin on Jack Kirby’s original Black Panther design, back when the character was going to be called Coal Tiger.” Quesada added, “I think every artist who has to draw Wakanda and Wakandan tech has their own spin on what it looks like. But I do get to draw a long list of characters and tend to be partial to the classic costumes.”
