James Gunn recently addressed the possibility of a Superman and Spider-Man crossover movie. In a new interview, he confirmed past discussions about the idea, explained what it would take to make it happen, and emphasized the importance of meaningful storytelling over spectacle.

In a Rolling Stone interview, James Gunn confirmed talks of a Superman and Spider-Man crossover, saying, “We’ve talked about it a billion times.” A 1970s Superman vs. Spider-Man comic sat on his table, leading the interviewer to remark, “Maybe it’s 10 years from now.”

Gunn added that the crossover “could easily happen,” but cautioned that it would only work if built on quality storytelling. “Just having Spider-Man and Superman team up isn’t gonna do it if it’s shit,” he stated, emphasizing the need for the film to “come from a real place” and not be “just a cash grab.”

The director explained that any crossover must begin with creative intent, not fan demand. “If I were to write a Superman-versus-Spider-Man movie… am I doing it because ‘Oh, yeah, people want to see Superman and Spider-Man team up’? For me, it would have to be…under someone who thought it was gonna be awesome.”

This echoes Gunn’s broader approach to filmmaking, which centers on personal connection to the material. “I did Superman because I loved the character,” he said, noting he only takes on stories that genuinely excite him.

The director currently focuses on launching the cinematic DCU with Superman, which releases on July 11, 2025. He co-heads DC Studios alongside Peter Safran and has emphasized script quality across all projects, even canceling a greenlit film due to screenplay issues.

Gunn stated, “We’re going to put out everything that we think is of the highest quality.” His statement reinforces that any potential crossover will depend on whether it meets those standards.
