Captain America reveals himself as a major Star Wars fan in Captain America #8, quoting the classic line “Never tell me the odds.”
Captain America’s love for Star Wars is perfectly in line with his ideals of liberty and fighting oppressive systems, just like the Rebel Alliance.
While Captain Marvel has long been the Avengers’ Star Wars geek, Captain America’s newfound love for the franchise could challenge her reign.

Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Captain America #8As a cosmically powered space-faring hero in her own right, Marvel Comics’ Captain Marvel has long been portrayed as the Avengers‘ most massive Star Wars fan. But it seems that Carol isn’t the only one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with a love for the galaxy far, far away. And now one surprising Avenger is challenging Captain Marvel for the role of Star Wars’ biggest fan.

Captain America #8 by J. Michael Straczynski, Carlos Magno, Espen Grudetjern, and VC’s Joe Caramagna sees the Sentinel of Liberty face off against Death itself alongside his immortal sister Life aka Lyra. Taunting Captain America, Death asks him if he’s even aware of how many have died fighting alongside Lyra.

Characteristically determined, Steve replies, “Nope. Not interested. As somebody in one of my favorite movies of all time once said – ‘Never tell me the odds.’’” Cap and Lyra manage to get through the battle, but Rogers’ newly-revealed love of Star Wars is both inherently interesting and totally in character.

Star Wars Is The Perfect Movie For Captain America

The Rebel Alliance Is Everything Steve Rogers Represents

Considering the impact that Star Wars had on the world during Cap’s infamous frozen slumber, it’s only natural that he’d look to familiarize himself with the major cultural touchstones he missed. And seeing as how the major crux of Star Wars, particularly the Original Trilogy, sees a plucky band of freedom fighters battling an oppressive empire, it follows that Steve Rogers would gravitate towards that story. Captain America has always been willing to fight for the little guy against oppressive systems even before he joined Project: Rebirth – a message that all Star Wars fans can relate to.

Considering his own personal history, it would be a bigger shock if Captain America was anything but a
Star Wars
fan.

Meanwhile, Captain Marvel has been the Avengers’ de facto Star Wars geek for years. She even went so far as to name her pet Flerken “Chewie” in the comics as a nod to her love of Chewbacca, instead of the MCU’s own Top Gun reference in the fan-favorite Goose. With her history, Carol Danvers’ love of Star Wars is as fitting for her as it is for Steve. And considering the close friendship between the two Avengers, it wouldn’t be a surprise to learn that Danvers introduced Steve to Star Wars in the first place.

Captain America’s Love Could Challenge Her Reign

Considering his own personal history, it would be a bigger shock if Captain America was anything but a Star Wars fan. After all, Steve Rogers has dedicated his life to upholding the ideals of liberty and freedom shared by the Original Trilogy’s own Rebel Alliance. Whether or not the Sentinel of Liberty will ever be able to out-geek his friend Carol Danvers is unclear. But at the very least, Captain Marvel and Captain America can argue about Midi-chlorians on other Star Wars topics between Avengers meetings.
