Wolverine will reportedly not be part of the initial X-Men lineup when Marvel Studios reboots the fan-favorite comic book team for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to trusted scooper CanWeGetSomeToast, “The current idea to reboot the X-Men in the MCU does NOT feature Wolverine on the team.” The scooper also hints that the studio’s plan for the mutants is connected to Marvel “starting to push the X-Men so hard across all mediums, and will continue to push them until they’re on the big screen.” If this rumor turns out to be true, it will be a stark contrast to 20th Century Fox’s X-Men film series which prominently featured or mentioned Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in almost every entry.

Jackman portrayed Logan/Wolverine in nine X-Men films between 2000 and 2017. While Logan was initially marketed as Jackman’s swan song for the character, the actor confirmed that he would be reprising the role for Deadpool 3, which will be the first X-Men film released as part of the MCU. Jackman is also rumored to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, with the fan-favorite mutant reportedly part of a Multiversal Avengers team. If Wolverine does appear post-Secret Wars, the role is expected to be cast with a fresh face.

Marvel Taking Pitches for X-Men Reboot

After reacquiring the rights to X-Men in 2019, Marvel Studios slowly began to introduce mutants into the MCU, with characters like Professor X and Namor in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, respectively. The MCU version of Ms. Marvel was also revealed to be a mutant instead of an Inhuman (a change that the comics later adopted).

With the Writers Guild of America strike over, Marvel Studios has reportedly begun setting meetings for pitches from writers for its X-Men reboot. Marvel is apparently in no rush to fill the job since an X-Men reboot remains undated; however, the position will likely be filled by the top of 2024. The lastX-Men movie to feature the superhero team’s name in the title was 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse.

What Is Wolverine’s Role in Deadpool 3?

Plot details on how Wolverine will factor into Deadpool 3 remain under wraps, but Jackman confirmed that the upcoming threequel will not touch 2017’s Logan, which initially served as the actor’s swan song for the character. The actor also hinted that time travel will be used to bring Wolverine into Deadpool’s timeline, which might put the fan-favorite Marvel superheroes on the Time Variance Authority’s radar. Deadpool 3 will be the first R-rated film produced by Marvel Studios as well as the first film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature Deadpool and Wolverine.

Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
