Amazon has decided to pull the plug on its long-gestating Silk: Spider Society series. The unfortunate news conversely follows the announcement that Nicolas Cage’s Noir series was moving forward on Prime Video.

Officially, Amazon made no acknowledgment of Silk: Spider Society at its upfront presentation where the Noir series was announced. Per Deadline, this is because the Silk: Spider Society series was quietly scrapped. The grim update comes about five years after the troubled series was first put into development, and it was formally greenlit about two years ago. Reportedly, Amazon’s decision to cut their losses and trash the series entirely was just made within the past few days.

A Horrifying Spider-Man Villain Joins Blood Hunt in Marvel’s New Comics This Week

Spider-Man officially joins Blood Hunt — and he inadvertently brought a few villains along for the ride in Marvel’s new comics this week.

The series was in development with Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) serving as showrunner. Silk: Spider Society was intended to be one of several projects developed for Amazon MGM Studios as part of a deal with Kang. While this series won’t be moving forward, Kang will continue to work with the company on other projects. The rights are now reverting back to Sony Pictures Television, and word is they are looking to shop the series to other potential buyers.

No specific reason was given for why Amazon is pulling the plug on Silk. There were reportedly a lot of problems during production, resulting in creative shifts with various concepts on where to take the story. Scripts were in evaluation when the WGA strike broke out in 2023, and after the strike ended, Amazon never reopened the writers’ room, though Kang’s latest pitch was said to be well-received. As IP projects based on Marvel characters are not cheap, moving forward with Noir could, have sealed the deal on Silk: Spider Society.

John Leguizamo has had many iconic roles, but he also regrets some he could’ve had.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be joining the Amazon Studios family for this next chapter of my career,” Kang said back in 2022 when first boarding the project. “I look forward to working with the executive team on diverse, character-forward, watercooler shows for a global audience and am so excited to dive in to my first challenge — bringing Korean-American superhero Silk to life on screen.”

Executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller added, “Angela is a pro’s pro whose perspective and creativity we greatly respect and admire. She’s also a hell of a lot of fun. She loves these characters and we feel really lucky for the chance to work with her to bring Cindy Moon’s story to the world.”
