The following contains major spoilers for NYX #10, on sale April 30 from Marvel Comics.
The New York City of the Marvel Universe has just been remade in one iconic villain’s twisted image.
While the majority of the eponymous team of NYX #10 are busy discussing the future, Laura Kinney, aka Wolverine, is all too busy being caught up in the present. As it turns out, while the rest of NYC’s mutant heroes were safe at home, Laura was watching on as the entire city was transformed into something truly terrifying. And, even if the rest of the team had been there with her, there was never anything they could have done to prevent Mojo City from taking over.

The rise of Mojo City is the latest in a long series of villainous plots carried out by the interdimensional horror known as Mojo. Hailing from a species known as Spinless Ones, many of whom were driven mad by a constant stream of Earthly transmissions, Mojo took over his native planet by seizing control of these transmissions. Eventually, his reach extended throughout his entire universe, rechristened the Mojoverse, from which Mojo launched attacks against various mutants to force them into playing different roles in his twisted televised events.
When Mojo first appeared in 1985’s Longshot #3 by Ann Nocenti and Arthur Adams, the villain had set his sights on the titular hero, whom he brainwashed into playing the role of star performer in a series broadcast across the cosmos. While Longshot ultimately escaped Mojo’s grasp, numerous other mutants have fallen into it all the same. Among the most prominent of these is Psylocke, who helped the New Mutants and X-Men alike battle against Mojo and his forces.

In recent months, the mutants of NYC have been manipulated from the shadows by the ominous Mister Friend. This seemingly diminutive, if overtly intimidating figure set out to convince wayward mutants in need of a home to carry out minor crimes in his name.
Eventually, it was revealed that these purportedly small-time crimes were all part of a bigger plot to unleash the very last Seed of Krakoa upon the city from within the X-Men’s old Treehouse. In combining the Seed with the mutant known as Local, Mojo was able to directly plug his own mind into the overarching structure and control it for himself.

X-Men
Since their debut in 1963, Marvel’s X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel’s heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.
Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world’s second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel’s most popular and important franchises.
