The following contains major spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #5, on sale May 7 from Marvel Comics.
Wolverine’s oldest nemesis has been reimagined for the new Ultimate Marvel Universe, and he is nothing like the original.
In a preview for the upcoming Ultimate Wolverine #5 from Marvel Comics, readers are dropped into the middle of one of the Eurasian Republic’s biggest cities – Rasputingrad. There, a gruff and rugged bar owner locks his doors and turns out the lights, though that is hardly the end of his night. Instead, it is just the beginning of Victor Creed’s night, especially since two young mutants have been waiting all day for him to finish smuggling them out of the country.

Although Marvel Comics’ original Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, was introduced in the pages of 1977’s Iron Fist #14 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, it wasn’t long before he established himself as an entirely different hero’s worst enemy. In the decades since his debut, Sabretooth has more than cemented his place as the one true nemesis of Wolverine, with their shared history stretching back over multiple generations. Even in the modern day, Sabretooth has continued in his annual tradition of terrorizing Wolverine, not to mention countless other plots against the X-Men icon.
The Victor Creed of the current Ultimate Marvel Universe is just the latest in a long line of characters to be drastically reimagined in this brave new corner of the Multiverse. While this reality was once almost identical to the primary Marvel Universe, the villainous variant of Reed Richards known as the Maker was able to remake it in his own image, at least to a point, by manipulating key moments in history to his twisted benefit. In doing so, the Maker established an entirely new kind of world order, one he lords over from the shadows by way of puppet leaders across the few nations that stand, and in which there are few heroes to stand in his way.

Marvel Comics’ next great cosmic epic is kicking off with appearances from two of the biggest powerhouses the Avengers have to offer.
Like Victor Creed being reintroduced as a mutant freedom fighter, the Ultimate Wolverine is a similarly far cry from the version of the character fans know best. While this Wolverine still wields a potent healing factor and unbreakable claws, he is hardly a hero at this point in his career.
Though he previously fought alongside the likes of Kitty Pryde, Wolverine was captured, tortured, and brainwashed into serving as the unstoppable Winter Soldier. Fortunately, a recent run-in with his old allies seems to have brought some of Wolverine’s buried memories to the surface, which might be enough for him to break free of his captor’s control entirely.
