Warning: contains spoilers for Gwenpool #1!
A shocking new version of Gwenpool has arrived, and Marvel just teased she has a major X-Men connection. The meta-textual Gwenpool ranks as one of the most memorable Marvel debuts of the past decade. Yet her time has seemingly drawn to a close, and Gwenpool has been replaced by a darker version. In a preview for Gwenpool #1, this shocking new incarnation of the character has ties to X-Men lore.
Gwenpool #1 is written by Cavan Scott and drawn by Stefano Nesi. The preview opens at a Weapon X facility, where a group of soldiers is hunting Gwenpool. The soldiers are expecting the classic Gwenpool, but instead find a murderous version who quickly dispatches them. After the killing stops, a disembodied voice refers to the new Gwenpool as “X-31.” Gwenpool refers to the voice as the “Great Architect” and fans see that whoever it is seems to be wearing a version of Professor X’s Cerebro helmet. The Architect charges Gwenpool with subduing a gang of Deathloks as the preview ends.
Gwen Stacy’s Legacy in the Marvel Universe, Explained
Both Spider-Gwen and Gwenpool Keep Gwen Stacy’s Spirit Alive, 50+ Years After Her Tragic Demise
Gwen Stacy still exerts a hold over the Marvel Universe, even 50+ years after her death. The one-time lover of Peter Parker, Gwen was killed by the Green Goblin, and the loss deeply affected Spider-Man. Years later, an alternate-universe version of Gwen Stacy debuted, one who had been bitten by the irradiated spider. Taking the name “Ghost Spider” (but also referred to as “Spider-Gwen”), she has become a major Marvel hero, thanks to her appearances in Sony’s Spider-Verse animated films, where she is voiced by Hailee Steinfeld.
Gwenpool can trace her roots back to a variant cover of Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars #2. Bachalo made the character up and thought nothing more of it. Gwenpool then became a favorite among cosplayers, so Marvel decided to create a fully-fleshed-out character.
Then came Gwenpool. A young woman named Gwendolyn Poole was accidentally transported to the Marvel Universe from the “real world.” After her arrival, she took the name “Gwenpool” and embarked on a career as a mercenary. In Gwen’s reality, Marvel’s heroes appear in comic books, and Gwenpool is a massive fan. Armed with extensive knowledge of the secret identities, powers and weaknesses of Marvel’s biggest heroes and villains, Gwenpool has left a trail of bodies in her wake. Gwenpool takes the best elements of Deadpool and Gwen Stacy and mixes them into one.
The New Gwenpool Debuts With a Host of Burning Questions
The New Gwenpool Raises Some Disturbing Possibilities
Yet now a new Gwenpool has entered the Marvel Universe, one darker and willing to use more extreme means to dispose of her foes. This new Gwenpool slices and dices her way through the soldiers, killing them with no mercy. The first Gwenpool had something of a conscience, but the new incarnation has no such hang-ups. The origin of this new Gwenpool is shrouded in mystery too: some have speculated that she is the Earth-616 Gwen Stacy, returned to life. If this is true, then it is one of the biggest events in comic history.
The preview floats the possibility that Gwenpool is the next in a long line of mutant hunting killing machines.
Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the new Gwenpool is her ties to the X-Men and the Weapon X project. Weapon X is a government program designed to control mutants, and previous alumni include Captain America and Wolverine. The preview floats the possibility that Gwenpool is the next in a long line of mutant hunting killing machines. If this new Gwenpool is the 616 Gwen Stacy returned to life, then it implies the Weapon X project is dabbling in the occult, raising the dead and enslaving them.

There Are Things We Want for Spider-Man, But Gwen Stacy’s Return Is Not One of Them
Spider-Man fans have been through a lot in recent memory, but few things would crush them more than seeing Gwen Stacy resurected from the dead.
Finally, there is the question of the “Great Architect.” As seen in the preview for Gwenpool #1, the Architect bears a strong resemblance to Professor X, right down to the Cerebro helmet. Professor X has distanced himself from the X-Men recently, relinquishing control of the team to Cyclops. Whether the Great Architect is really Professor X will be one of the mysteries that drives the new Gwenpool title. It is possible someone in the Weapon X Project has stolen the Cerebro helmet and is using it to somehow control Gwenpool, turning her into a vicious and cold-blooded killer.
