The all-new, roller-skating Ghost Rider Fantasma (aka Isabella Alvarez) just made her first full print appearance in the Ghost Rider: Robbie Reyes Special (2024) #1. The brand new Brazilian Ghost Rider was designed for a series of variant covers starring theoretical teen sidekicks for the Avengers. Since then, they’ve been gradually entering Marvel canon, soon to form an official team as the New Champions.

‘A Fantasmic Roller Derby Adventure’by creative team Melissa Flores, Jan Bazaldua, Luiz Zavala and Ariana Maherfollows Robbie Reyes fighting hellhounds as Ghost Rider. He reveals the day started with a normal trip to the roller derby with his little brother Gabe and Gabe’s girlfriend, but a portal opened in the middle of the arena. Still inside among the frantic crowd, Gabe and his girlfriend are about to be attacked by a hellhound, but it’s pulled away by a glowing rope wielded by a brand new Ghost Rider!

Unlike most of Marvel’s other Ghost Riders, Fantasma is based on skating rather than a vehicle, with burning flames forming pigtails around her jet-black helmet. Like other Riders, Fantasma can generate hellfire-infused chains, however it’s her other ability that makes her dangerously unique. Fantasma will appear again in New Champions #1 coming January 2025.

After months of anticipation, Marvel has finally announced a fresh “New Champions” series, featuring iconic original heroes like Hellrune and Liberty.

Fantasma’s Emotions Can Open Portals to Hell

The New Ghost Rider Has a Major Problem

Isabella Alvarez’s major distinguishing power as a Ghost Rider is the ability to open portals to Hell – something she does to banish the hellhounds. She’s comfortable enough with Hell that she’s willing to plunge into the fiery realm even when Robbie Reyes isn’t, but these powers have their dark side.

After saving Robbie’s brother, Isabella Alvarez says to herself that her panic attack caused the portal full of hellhounds to open. She doesn’t seem to have much control over this specific power as she’s just discovering how it works. This is a unique way of dragging Fantasma into the heroic life, as her ability to access Hell presents her with threats that she feels responsible for summoning. A Ghost Rider who sporadically summons demons to Earth is a new twist on the hero’s status quo.

If Fantasma can learn to control this power, she could be a huge asset to the New Champions team. She could teleport to anywhere through Limbo like other characters such as Magik. From the way she fights off the hellhounds with Robbie Reyes though, she already seems to be a formidable opponent with her other powers. Now, she just has to prevent her portals costing anyone their life.

The All-New Ghost Rider Is Not Like All the Others

Isabella Alvarez Is Joining the New Champions

There are many similarities between Isabella Alvarez and other Ghost Riders, but there are a few differences besides her portal power that stands out; the first is her name. She does not claim the Ghost Rider title, but instead calls herself Fantasma. Second, when she suggests closing the portal from the inside, Robbie Reyes refuses, claiming “It’s hot in Hell,” but Fantasma shows no fear, suggesting she has some extra resistance to hellfire. Finally, Isabella states “I definitely think I’m cursed,” hinting she may not know where her powers came from, and she didn’t make a deal with the Devil or any of Marvel’s demons.

Fantasma’s origin is still a mystery and there is a lot to learn about her. She’s still a rookie in the superhero game as she’s just getting used to her powers, but she already has a leg up against the other Ghost Riders with no fear of Hell, and is already a formidable fighter on roller skates. She will be an asset in the New Champions team as she breaks into her powers along with the other new heroes. Isabella Alvarez aka the new Ghost Rider Fantasma will return in New Champions #1 coming January 8, 2025.

Ghost Rider

The Ghost Rider franchise revolves around the Marvel Comics character Ghost Rider, a supernatural anti-hero who gains the ability to transform into a flaming skeletal figure and ride a hellfire-fueled motorcycle. The most famous Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, is a stunt motorcyclist who makes a deal with the demon Mephistopheles, transforming him into the Ghost Rider to battle evil spirits. The franchise includes two films starring Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, exploring his fight against demonic forces and his internal struggle with the curse.
