Warning: contains potential spoilers for Spider-Verse Vs VenomVerse #1

Marvel’s epic Spider-Man versus Venom war begins by calling out the biggest lie in the character’s history. Venom rocketed into the American comics scene in the late 1980s, rocking Spider-Man’s world to its core. Since then, Venom has drifted into “anti-hero” territory, as well as becoming a cosmic being. Now, in a preview for Spider-Verse Vs Venomverse #1, the similarities between the two characters become even more apparent.

Spider-Verse Vs Venomverse #1 is written by Kyle Higgins and drawn by Luciano Vecchio. The preview recounts the arcs of both Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, beginning with their lives before gaining powers and afterward. Using shared narration boxes, the preview highlights what Peter and Eddie have in common, stressing their triumphs and their losses. As the preview ends, both heroes vow to protect their territory and friends from the other, despite all the common ground the two men share. The preview ends there, but it has made its point: Peter and Eddie’s stories are virtually the same.

Venom and Spider-Man’s Heated Rivalry in Marvel Comics, Explained

Over Time, Spider-Man and Venom Have Come to an Understanding

In the Marvel Universe, few rivals can come close to matching Spider-Man and Venom’s intensity. Born when Spider-Man rejected the black symbiote costume, Venom initially sought revenge against the Wall-Crawler. Eddie Brock blamed Spider-Man for ruining his life. The symbiote sensed Eddie’s anger at Spider-Man and, perhaps detecting a sympathetic soul, bonded with him, turning Eddie into Venom. Venom then embarked on a hate-filled quest against Spider-Man. At the same time, Venom had his own moral code: harm no innocents. This code, combined with Venom’s surge in popularity, laid the foundations for his redemption.

Shortly before Knull’s attack on Earth, Captain America offered Venom a spot on the Avengers. He declined.

Eddie Brock would eventually work through his issues with Spider-Man, realizing that Peter was not to blame for his fall from grace. Eddie also discovered he had a son named Dylan, and this further convinced him to change his ways. Yet, it would be the revelation of the existence of Knull, the King in Black. The god of the symbiotes, Knull, attacked Earth, but Venom was able to turn him back, becoming the new King in Black in the process, while Dylan became Venom on Earth.

Yet now, all the progress Eddie has made in terms of his relationship with Spider-Man may be about to come undone.

Yet now, all the progress Eddie has made in terms of his relationship with Spider-Man may be about to come undone. Since becoming the King in Black, Eddie has discovered much more about the symbiotes, including the existence of the Hive-Mind. Meanwhile, Spider-Man has learned he is one of many spider avatars throughout the multiverse. Both Spider-Man and Venom’s respective families have grown a good deal in recent years, and the two factions are about to come to a head. The results of such a battle could be catastrophic for the Marvel Universe.
