I’ve been a fan of Deadpool since the early 2000s, and wound up with quite a collection of comics featuring the Merc With A Mouth over the years. I did a bit of a write-up on Wade Wilson going on 10 years ago, and how I enjoyed playing as him in videogames. Since then, I’ve actually interviewed Nolan North (forever referred to as “my good friend Nolan North”) and asked why his favourite superhero voice was Deadpool, but I’ve not had many chances to play as him.
Sure, Deadpool has appeared in mobile games and as a DLC character in Marvel’s Midnight Suns, but he’s only had the one game all to himself. So, as a big fan, I was excited to see the trailer for Marvel’s Deadpool VR at Summer Game Fest.
From what’s been announced so far, it will involve a world tour of the Marvel universe, based on the comics rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You’ll fight Omega Red, Lady Deathstrike, Flag Smasher… and was that Mephisto in the trailer?
Developer Twisted Pixel has said that it wanted this Deadpool to be different from the others, which is why they didn’t get Nolan North involved. Well, actually, they said it’s why they didn’t get Ryan Reynolds involved — but I imagine money and scheduling had more to do with it.
I actually have a theory as to why they tagged Neil Patrick Harris to voice Wade Wilson, and it involves representation. Harris said years ago that he didn’t want to play straight characters anymore, since he is gay, and Nolan North has been married to a woman for over 20 years. Deadpool is pansexual, so having a queer man voice him is better characterisation — like how non-white characters in animation are now being voiced by non-white actors instead of a white one using an accent. Deadpool has only dated (and married) women, non-binary people, and shapeshifters, but to be fair the only men he’s ever been attracted to are straight. This got a little off-track, I think, but that’s Deadpool.
The Marvel’s Deadpool VR gameplay from the little vertical slices that have been shown off so far look really fun. I like throwing things at enemies, so it being encouraged is an actual highlight — especially since you can apparently upgrade your katana into a boomerang sword?! More like that, please. Also, there’s a grappling hook gun, and grappling hooks improve every game.
