Marvel Rivals is a phenomenally designed game that makes the most of its roster of 33 iconic Marvel Comics characters and shows off their unique battle abilities and techniques. The game divides the 33 heroes and villains into 3 classes (Strategist, Duelist and Vanguard), each with their own priorities. Vanguards are the tankiest class; they have the most HP, and they usually have abilities that allow them to tank damage from enemies. Strategists tend to be the supportive characters, and they focus on healing allies while trying to position themselves in a way that they can avoid enemy duelists. Duelists are the damage-dealing class, and they are supposed to take down enemy targets swiftly so that the team can control the point.

Each character in Marvel Rivals is seamlessly implemented into the game currently, but some Marvel Comics characters would give developers a headache to include in the game. With Ultron being leaked as the game’s next character, fans have begun to speculate who will be added next, but players should realize that not every popular character will make the cut in a game as complex to make a character for as Marvel Rivals.

Emma Frost is an Intriguing Former Antagonist

Throughout Marvel Comics history, many former antagonists have redeemed themselves as heroes, and the X-Men are known for this trope, with Magneto being a standout in this regard. However, there is another significant X-Men character that has become a leader for the Mutants in more recent comics, as Emma Frost is sometimes shown as the co-headmistress of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters.

While Emma Frost would be a welcome addition to the Marvel Rivals roster, she would be nightmarish to be included in the game because of her varied skill set. She is predominantly known for her telepathic powers, which would be hard to include in a hero shooter because taking control away from players is not usually a beloved characteristic in the genre. Unfortunately, one of the Hellfire Club’s most important members is not likely to arrive in Marvel Rivals any time soon.

Likely Role in Marvel Rivals: Duelist

The X-Men have some of the most varied powers of any hero team in comics, and their story writing makes them a phenomenal group in every issue they are in. Some of the group’s most influential characters (e.g. Wolverine and Storm) are already included in Marvel Rivals, but plenty of them, including Iceman, are not, making it likely that some will appear in the game in the future. Unfortunately, Ice-Man is among these, as his ability to manipulate terrain with his ice would be difficult to translate into the game.

As the roster currently stands, only one character, Groot, can create terrain, and this ability is a balancing nightmare, as it can effectively block off every angle of the point at once. To include Iceman in the game, NetEase Games would have to find a way to make the character’s mobility balanced but not too limiting, and that might be a chore for the development team to do.

Goose Would Be Difficult For a Multitude of Reasons

Marvel Rivals has already shown that some characters are a balancing nightmare for reasons outside the abilities that they use in battle. While Jeff the Land Shark is phenomenally fun to play, he is almost impossible to hit because of his tiny hitbox, showing that small characters can often be a nuisance in hero shooters. This is the main reason why a modern fan favorite might not appear in Marvel Rivals.

Goose made his first appearance in the Captain Marvel film in 2019 and has become a beloved character ever since. However, their powers would be hard to include in the game, as some would have to be left out because of how varied they are, and their small stature would make them a chore to develop. Goose is an amazing and adorable character, but they will likely not be coming to Marvel Rivals any time soon.

Mystique is a Phenomenally Elegant Shapeshifter

Copying a character’s abilities is always entertaining in a game, as it taps into the power fantasy that the player is stronger than their opponent. However, if too many characters can do it, the trait becomes less unique and far less entertaining to see in a match. This is the major reason that Mystique might find it difficult to find her way into Marvel Rivals, with Loki already occupying the copycat slot.

Mystique’s powers are phenomenally complex, as her ability to shapeshift would be hard to transfer into the game without making it frustrating to face the character. Mystique might be a fan favorite in Marvel Comics, but including her in Marvel Rivals might be more frustrating for players than not doing so.

Domino’s Luck Would Be Frustrating to Fight

RNG (Random Number Generation) is a frustrating factor in single-player games, but when it is included in a multiplayer game, it becomes nightmarish to deal with. Having a game randomize what map you will be playing on or what game mode is fine, but when it occurs with specific character abilities, it becomes difficult for every player in the lobby to manage. Therefore, it is increasingly unlucky that Domino will ever make her way into Marvel Rivals.

Domino’s powers are almost entirely randomly activated, as she has to be able to be harmed in a particular scenario for them to activate. This would not translate well into a hero shooter because developers would be unable to make a gimmick like this fair across and kit or varied enough to make a character interesting. While Domino’s powers are phenomenally intriguing, it is unlikely that they would ever work in Marvel Rivals.

Mysterio is an Iconic But Odd Marvel Antagonist

Marvel Rivals has a surprising lack of antagonists in the game at launch as only 4 of the 33 characters (Loki, Hela, Venom and Magneto) are villains. Luckily for fans, the next inclusion is sure to be an antagonist, as Ultron was leaked to be the next strategist included in Marvel Rivals‘ roster. Unfortunately, one of Spider-Man’s greatest foes is unlikely to be included in the game because he would be a nightmare to create in a hero shooter.

Unlike many of the characters in Marvel Rivals currently, Mysterio (aka Quentin Beck) has no powers, instead relying entirely on his own smarts and creations to battle. Unfortunately, a lot of his gadgets overlap with other characters, namely Spider-Man, so his inclusion would be redundant, making him unlikely to ever appear in Marvel Rivals.

Mephisto is a Phenomenally Powerful Demon

Some characters in the Marvel Comics pantheon are regarded as iconic because of their interactions with the heroes, and Mephisto is no exception. While the Marvel universe does not have a direct depiction of the devil, Mephisto is as close as it gets, and his deals with heroes are among the most intriguing plot threads in Marvel history. Because of this, it might be difficult to translate his powers into Marvel Rivals.

Mephisto’s powers are almost limitless, as he can alter realities, make demonic deals, regenerate and control many different Hellfire abilities. Because of this, it might be difficult to include a selection of abilities in Marvel Rivals that adequately shows off his true power. Despite this, he would arguably be one of the most interesting choices for the game and fans hope he is eventually added to Marvel Rivals one day.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are an Odd Pairing

Duo characters are always odd to create in hero shooters, and they often need to be balanced in unique ways to ensure that they are not overpowered. Only one duo character (Cloak & Dagger) is currently in Marvel Rivals, which makes one odd pair unlikely to appear in the game any time soon.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are an intriguing pairing, but their powers are relatively unknown, so a kit might be hard to design for them. While duo characters might be a fun idea for the game in the future, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur are likely not the choice that NetEase Games would include in the game.

Howard the Duck is an Oddball Marvel Character

The Marvel Comics pantheon is full of many different oddball characters, but there is perhaps no character more weird than Howard the Duck, the star of the critically panned 1986 film. Unlike many of his counterparts, Howard has no powers, making him difficult to implement in the game. While his mech suit would make him an interesting Vanguard, there are far better picks than him.

Howard is likely not coming to Marvel Rivals any time soon, as he is an odd character in Marvel Comics. However, his exclusion does not mean that no other odd characters can appear in the game, and some other iconic Marvel animals could show up in Marvel Rivals in the future.

Small characters are notoriously frustrating in hero shooters, and including a duo of them would be phenomenally annoying to deal with in Marvel Rivals. Because of this, Ant-Man & The Wasp are unlikely to ever appear in Marvel Rivals, because their puny stature would make them infuriating to deal with in battle.
