Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Get Fury #3! The Punisher has had no shortage of shocking targets throughout his Marvel Comics career, with his most recent, Nick Fury, being just one of the latest examples. However, the series in which Frank Castle is trying to ‘get Fury’ has just outdone itself, as the Punisher is also targeting someone else – someone who no one expected to see: Nick Fury’s daughter.

In Get Fury #3 by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows, Frank Castle has been tasked by the CIA to kill Nick Fury after the Colonel was captured by the vietcong. The CIA told Castle they were concerned that Fury would reveal classified information to the enemy, but the real reason they wanted him dead was that he knew about a narcotics-smuggling operation the CIA was conducting in North Vietnam, and he threatened to expose them. Unfortunately for the CIA, Castle knew all about Fury’s mission to expose the truth, meaning he wasn’t going to execute Fury, but rescue him.

While scouting the location where Fury was being held captive, the Punisher comes across two other people who were doing the exact same thing: Nick Fury’s former lover and the daughter they share. This is the first time it’s been revealed that Nick Fury had a daughter, and now here she and her mother are, right in the Punisher’s crosshairs. However, unlike most (if not all) of Castle’s other targets, the Punisher isn’t trying to kill these women. He targets them, yes, but upon speaking with them, it seems they’re going to work together to save Nick Fury.

Punisher Origin Change Makes [SPOILER] Responsible for the Lethal Vigilante’s Existence

The Punisher’s origin is currently changing during his latest Marvel Comics story by Garth Ennis, and those changes make 1 shocking hero responsible.

Little is known about Nick Fury’s former lover and their daughter aside from their names – Phuong Thuy Tran and Bian – and that they are prepared to help the Punisher bust Nick Fury out of the most secure POW prison in North Vietnam. That implies that both women are highly trained, and more than willing to get their hands dirty in the form of murderous violence. While that’s an exciting development for this story alone, it also sets the stage for future Marvel Comics storylines.

Bian, the daughter of Nick Fury, is a young woman in this story (which is set during the Vietnam War in 1971), which means she’ll be a bit older and more experienced in the current era of Marvel Comics canon. In other words, the storytelling potential of this character is virtually limitless. Daughter of Nick Fury, trained in covert-ops, and went on a mission with the Punisher is a pretty impressive résumé, and that experience could be expanded upon in future storylines in any number of ways.

Garth Ennis Continues to Masterfully Expand on Punisher Lore

Garth Ennis has been writing Punisher for many years, with Get Fury being just the latest under his belt. And with every comic run Ennis tackles, he expands on Punisher lore in increasingly awesome ways. It was Ennis who established that Frank Castle made the transformation into the Punisher during his third tour in Vietnam (with Born), his initial Punisher run inspired the storyline of the Punisher’s 2004 film, and now, Ennis links the Punisher to an all-new character tied to Nick Fury, offering another expansion of Punisher lore with the potential to impact many stories to come.

However, even if Bian doesn’t leave a lasting mark on the Marvel Universe, her introduction in this storyline alone is mind-blowing enough, as she is the daughter no one knew Nick Fury had. Not only that, but Nick Fury’s daughter was targeted by, and about to go on a mission with, the Punisher, and fans should be very excited about what’s about to happen next.
