The following contains major spoilers for Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1, on sale April 30 from Marvel Comics.
The darkest chapter of Kitty Pryde’s past is back in the spotlight, and so is everything she suffered during it.
Wolverine and Kitty Pryde #1 brings readers back to the early days of 1985, when the eponymous duo were living out some particularly harsh days in a picturesque corner of Tokyo. Unfortunately for Kitty, the gleaming skyline is only a distraction from the pain she is reeling from during her regular training sessions under Wolverine’s watch. To make matters worse, it isn’t just the physical blows that hurt the most, but the psychological toll that comes from being forced to communicate in the same language as her recently deceased tormentor – Ogun.

When Katherine “Kitty” Pryde first appeared in the pages of 1979’s X-Men #129 by Chris Claremont and John Byrne, her recently emerged mutant abilities had drawn the interest of both the titular team of mutant heroes and their rivals in the form of Emma Frost’s Hellfire Club. Unsurprisingly, Kitty decided to team up with the X-Men, and she soon found herself a welcoming new home in Xavier’s school. She also found some fast new allies, including Wolverine, who proved to be both one of her closest friends and most trusted mentors alike.
After years of fighting alongside the X-Men, Kitty discovered that her father was working with various Japanese gangsters, driving her to take on an international journey to rescue him. Instead, this landed her in the clutches of the dreaded Ogun, a powerful sorcerer and ninja who had previously trained Logan and very nearly taken complete control of the mutant antihero’s mind and body. Eventually, Ogun made a place for himself within the ranks of the Yakuza, which was the first stepping stone towards his wider career as a comic book villain.

When Kitty came to Japan in search of her father, Ogun kidnapped and brainwashed the young mutant hero before training her to be his perfect assassin. Thankfully, Kitty broke free of Ogun’s control before the villain was struck down by Wolverine, although it wasn’t for quite some time after that he truly died.
In fact, Ogun has made a habit of cheating death over the years, allowing him to continue terrorizing his former acolytes. Ogun most recently returned during the war between Orchis and all of mutantkind, during which he claimed the enigmatic Sharp, aka Shogun, as his latest living host. Once Ogun lost control over Shogun, however, his spirit was returned to the pits of Hell where it belonged.
