Marvel Comics may have revealed its newest iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, but we have no idea what the future holds for the MCU’s version.

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. III concluded the trilogy he set out to make, and Gunn wasn’t the only one to bid goodbye to the MCU.

Drax actor Dave Bautista also confirmed that it would be his last time in the role.

That being said, the post-credits stinger did read, ‘The legendary Star-Lord will return’, so it’s not the end for everyone on the team.

While James Gunn’s trilogy was fantastic, it would be exciting to see a new director step onboard.

Just look at how the vibe of the Thor films completely shifted when it was Taika Waititi’s turn to take the helm.

I’m sure Marvel execs are busy behind the scenes finding the right fit for the franchise.

Whenever a new Guardians film does manifest, the team will likely have a new line-up.

Presumably though, that team will still be led by Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord if that aforementioned tease is anything to go by.

On that topic, so-called insider Alex Perez has brought an interesting tidbit to life during a new Q&A with The Cosmic Circus.

Marvel originally had big plans for Star-Lord: “There were plans to have him form the Annihilators. IDK what the plan is now,” Perez said.

If you don’t know, the Annihilators are yet another fictional team made up of various space-based characters.

In the comics, it’s actually a team created by Cosmo following the passing of Star-Lord so clearly the MCU’s iteration was set to be a tad different.

Marvel fans aren’t too sure what to think of the idea.

“I believe anything is possible through good writing, but it’s funny that this guy retired to get to know himself and hangout with Grandpa and then pivots to form a team called The Annihilators,” wrote meme_abstinent.

“I would honestly be fine if Star-Lord is retired as a character. Despite the end tag about him returning, his story felt done after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If he has to be brought back, I hope Marvel Studios takes their time and figures out a way to do it right,” added Joshawott27.

With the MCU now firmly heading in the right direction, I’m sure much deliberation is happening over every major decision – including what’ll happen with Star-Lord’s return.
