Marvel Comics is finally revealing how they plan to handle Iron Fist after the character’s death in last year’s anniversary special. A new four-issue limited series will explore the character’s hidden mythos.
Jason Loo (Werewolf by Night: Red Band) and Fran Galán (Carnage) unite for a new limited series, The Undead Iron Fist, launching this September. Marvel recently shared cover art and a synopsis of the series, promising to follow up on the shocking events of last year’s Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special that resulted in Danny Rand’s tragic death. In The Undead Iron Fist, he will go on a journey that exposes K’un-Lun’s darkest secret and enlightens him (and the readers) to some of the Iron Fists’ greatest legends.

Marvel’s synopsis for the series teases how The Undead Iron Fist will dig deeper into the character’s legacy in an exciting new way. “The Book of the Iron Fist declares that every Iron Fist will die by the age of 33… but who created this false prophecy? Danny Rand was killed… but can you truly kill an Immortal Iron Fist? Learn the truth about the legacy of the Iron Fist as Danny Rand rises once more to snuff out those that threaten that legacy… before Danny’s time runs out.”
2024’s Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special celebrated the character’s comics legacy, with Loo and Whilce Portacio teaming up to tell a story that brought Danny Rand’s life to its apparent end. Other stories in the special include a classic tale with Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Lan Medina and a story starring the current Iron Fist, Lin Lie, by Alyssa Wong and Von Randal, as well as adventures with the Daughters of the Dragon and Heroes for Hire.

The Undead Iron Fist writer, Jason Loo, talked about his decision to kill off Danny in Marvel’s press release for the new series. “I was so relieved to not encounter any fan backlash or outrage when I killed off Danny Rand,” Loo said. “Because there was always a plan to bring him back, but we wanted to make the fans wait.“
With Iron Fist poised to make his triumphant return in The Undead Iron Fist, Loo teased the character would soon work his way back into the main continuity of Marvel Comics, too. “Not only was I busy plotting his next explosive chapter, Danny has been going through his own journey to find his way back into the 616 land of the living. And from the very first issue, he’s back swinging with ruthless vengeance. Artist Fran Galán is bringing so much wicked kineticism on every page, readers are going to be floored by this book.”
The Undead Iron Fist #1 can be pre-ordered at local comic shops today and will go on sale this September.
