Marvel Comics editor Tom Brevoort explains exactly why Weapon X-Men being canceled isn’t all that surprising.
Brevoort responded to the news that writer Joe Casey and artist ChrisCross’ Weapon X-Men, originally intended as an ongoing series, will be coming to a close with the release of its fifth issue. When asked if the series simply needed more time to find its footing before being cancelled, Brevoort explained that the notion is “one of those ideas that gets thrown around whenever a particular project reaches its end.”

Daredevil Explains Why He’s Back In The Black Suit (& The Reason is Morbid)
Marvel’s Daredevil is going back in black, and the real reason why is even more disturbing than what Matt Murdock has been telling himself.
“The plain fact of the matter is that in my experience, I can’t think of any instance where a failing title suddenly experienced a turn-around and became a solid seller,” Brevoort explained. “So the fact of the matter is that the best chance you have to capture enough of an audience is with issue #1, at the launch. And if you don’t, it’s unlikely that you’re going to suddenly be able to turn things around later. So I’d have liked it if Weapon X-Men had been able to go on longer, but I’m also confident that if the numbers are weak now, they won’t be any less weak at issue #8 or #12 or whatever.”
The latest volume of Marvel Comics’ Weapon X-Men brought together a fan-favorite team consisting of Wolverine, Cable, Chamber, Thunderbird, and Deadpool. While the core of the group all have the same mission in mind, the series’ very first issue makes it clear that the most unhinged of the group is only there for a paycheck. By the issue’s end, Deadpool has not only betrayed his team by sabotaging their efforts, but he has stolen away with Wolverine, who is delivered to none other than the classic Marvel villain Baron Strucker.

Weapon X-Men was just one of several new team titles released in the wake of Marvel Comics’ Fall of X event, which charted the end of the Krakoan Era. Among these team books are X-Men by writer Jed MacKay and artist Ryan Stegman and Uncanny X-Men by writer Gail Simone and artist David Marquez, each of which is set to continue as an ongoing series. Unfortunately, NYX, X-Force, and X-Factor are all slated to close out their respective runs with their tenth issues, all releasing over the next six weeks.
