Summary
With the SAG-AFTRA strike at an end, the MCU is forging ahead with the production of its most anticipated movies, including Fantastic Four, with reports suggesting that Javier Bardem is the top pick for its main villain. In the current lineup, Fantastic Four is slated for a release between Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts. Anticipation is already at a fever pitch, but recent rumors have certainly stoked that fire as part of an explosion of news surrounding Marvel’s Fantastic Four.
According to The Insneider, the Oscar-winning Bardem is the studio’s top pick to play the planet-devouring Galactus in the Fantastic Four’s MCU debut. If the casting goes ahead, this will be huge news for two reasons. First, Galactus is one of Marvel’s most iconic villains and one that has been begging for a faithful big-screen appearance alongside the MCU’s best villains for years. For another, Bardem would be a perfectly cast and valuable addition to the MCU. Bardem’s credentials for playing a dispassionate and chilling mass murderer are, after all, enshrined in his award-winning performance as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men.

Galactus is among the most intimidating villains to come out of Marvel Comics, whose unfathomable size is just one small part of why he is so feared. Galactus subsists on a diet of planets, whose terrifying fates are sealed by his herald, the Silver Surfer. The most terrifying aspect of this villain, however, is the silent and unfeeling way he goes about his grim cosmic business as a being beyond all reason and comprehension. Should Galactus appear in Marvel’s Fantastic Four, he would represent a departure from the norm when it comes to MCU villains, as he is neither a sympathetic villain nor one that can be reasoned with.
Galactus’ arrival would also be one of the first times that the MCU has rehashed a villain used in recent comic book movie history. Galactus was already depicted on the big screen in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, which was released just one year before Iron Man in 2007. His depiction as a toothy space cloud, however, was one of the movie’s most lambasted features. It is for this reason that he needs to be done justice as a more faithful iteration of the world eater, possibly in the guise of a grim-faced Bardem, in his MCU debut as Fantastic Four‘s arch-villain.
